Using right references are the key to everything, regardless of the model to be realistic, stylized or any other category, they help you gauge the differences and weak spots Also, having balance in your model, like too much detail wont make your model great if the base is not right vice versa.

3d modeling is not just about things we see at the first place. The technical aspects is one of the most important way to show that you care and you do things right. No penetration, edges in between objects need to be aligned in a way it can bend easily. Poly counts is important if you want to get a scene not too heavy for other departments. Looping is important so rigging can do their job fast and easily. Also, you have to think how your mesh will be done for UVs, so UDIMs are maximize and with the right texel density People underestimate the tech side of modeling, you can be the best artist visually but if your mesh is full of crap and can be send to other dept or always comeback for tweaks, if will affect deadline for the entire prod

There are different aspects on modeling If you are working on new Development then first you need to model your component in your mind, considering application, assembly, function, and fitment. Then you can model it as per your convenience. But other aspect if you have some ready referance drawing then you can follow the same methodology for creating the model.

When you're messing with 3D stuff go for meshes over parts they're like the VIPs of optimization. They let you chop off those useless faces, making things run smoother. But watch out for silhouette changes for example in Blender, that Decimate thing helps trim down geometry without making a mess. Limited Dissolve merges faces neatly. Oh, and don't forget about subdivision surfaces they're like the secret sauce, making things look smoother without going overboard. Mix and match these tricks and your 3D game will be on point.

Optimize your models for efficiency without sacrificing detail. Find a balance between high-quality visuals and performance, especially if your work is intended for real-time applications or gaming.

It's all about creating a base shape, a silhouette from a quick glance the player can immediately identify what the object is. Once you get the base shape, you can cut back on all of the small little nuts and bolts and add them into the textures. Keep that in mind when optimizing. You want to keep as much of the general shape to save on overall performance of the game. You can also make a super highpoly model with all of the nuts and bolts added, and bake a high to low normal map or height map to help with the texturing phase. Alot of cutting back on a model is instinct. Takes a bit of practice but it's a skill you want to work on! :)

Here are my best tips after sucking doing realistic materials and I spent weeks learning about PBR and realistic materials. ?????? -Use real textures, what better way to improve your textures? -Bake Always! Make sure you have good UVS and do your baking, so you can use smart materials that detect detect the curvature of your object to ensure the details you add are accurate. -Search for references, know your reference makes, see how interacts with light and try to add it to your objects. inaccurate roughness can mess with how your object is being perceived.

One of the best tips is using "shadows for lights' which are called "gobo" . the other trick is not relaying on HDRI's , they are good for base lighting . they are not meant to be used as the main source of light (most of the times)

Also a great sense of rhythm in the animation, the different tempo, playing between slow and fast. In my experience a well done and beautiful animation can give a big plus to the 3D model, as well as charisma, personality, feelings etc.

While modeling on Sketchup for example, I always turn all the materials visualization off to make sure the are no inverted surfaces on my model. This way I prevent things from going invisible while rendering images. One other glitch that happens the most is when two or more surfaces overlap, i try to leave a gap between materials when that is the case, or fix it during render options, by changing the "flicker" amount, creating a fake distance between materials

Don't get me wrong, a great 3D model is a huge help in delivering great illustrations. But if I have to pick a great 3D model, or some 2D work that would enhance 10x more the views, I would go with the second one. Lighting, mood, atmosphere, depth, contrast...these are the elements that spark curiosity and emotions in viewers. A great 3D model is very handy, but is just a small piece of the puzzle

Exaggerate your shape a bit further than real life when you’re modeling. -Considering players usually recognize the model for a distance, exaggerating the shape a bit will help them see the model more easily. -If you’re baking mesh maps, it will help baked details more visible also.

The imperfections should be visible not only in materials but also in the geometry of the objects themselves. No real world object has perfect 90 degrees edges and perfectly sharp corners, no spherical objects are perfectly round.

First of all, I agree 100% with the above points!.. Secondly, I started doing something that leveled my game fast, this was after I realized "If the modeling stage is done well, and I mean WELL i.e. perfect polycount, topology and painstaking detail e.t.c The remaining steps are a piece of cake!!! :) So I started intentionally allocating more than enough time to the modeling, which you might think prolongs the process, but actually, it speeds things up at the end. Also guess what lol "top noche models are great already on their own" even in a clay render!!!
