Certain things when broken are impossible to recover. Among these things is trust. Trusting is an act of faith, and faith is a very deep feeling within us. It is common for conflicts to exist in any group, the leader can overcome them by example and proximity. I'm very repetitive talking about this and, unfortunately, people have a hard time accepting something so simple.

To de-escalate IT conflicts and rebuild trust, start by identifying the root cause of the conflict. This may involve digging deeper to uncover underlying issues such as communication breakdowns, mismatched expectations, resource constraints, lack of clarity, personality clashes, or organizational culture issues. First start with validation. Find out what it is that they want and why they want it. Validate that it is ok for them to have an opinion. If you don't validate first, odds are good there won't be any real communication. Paraphrase back to them asking if you really understood and then let them correct you till you can repeat it to them and they agree that you understand their perspective. From there you can ask non-judgmental questions like "Have you considered any other solutions?" "Have you put together a list of desired solution attributes and how do all the potential options you found measure up?" and then "Have you considered this solution, and could we rank it with the others?" and "Are there any constraints we have to work with?

Humans have 5 primary psychological needs: to be seen, be heard, to matter, to belong, and to be cared for (or loved). Understanding this gives you an instant opportunity to acknowledge what someone may need in the moment, and connect with that person. For example, if someone does not feel heard, they will raise the volume of their voice or their tone will change. This is a cue that the communication is not working. Acknowledging this, "I noticed you increased the volume (or your tone changed). I feel like I may not be understanding what you are trying to explain. What I heard you say was '....'. Do you mean this (paraphrase or summarize)?" Seek first to understand, then seek to be understood (7 Habits of Highly Effective People).

If you are a network administrator nothing is more frustrating than the having the network go down and your coworkers are asking for updates for what seems like every second. If I am ever in that situation, I stop to remember the goal of the company and realize that without the network running optimally, my coworkers cannot complete that goal. It builds empathy toward the situation and allows me to stay calm because I understand what it’s like to be hindered at a job due to something that is out of your control. Best thing to do is be patient, clear your head of outside noise and do what you do best.

One would hope that no matter how passionately each side feels about their solutions, there are some more overarching goals that both could agree on irrespective of the tech. There is always a customer and fully understanding their stated requirements, teasing out their unstated requirements, and a good definition of what success would look like can go a long way to helping focus on things that are more important than what tech hill to die on.

Win-win strategies allow multiple parties to find mutually beneficial solutions while conducting negotiations. I prefer the win-win-win approach where both parties, as well as the larger environment of the conflict are winners, however, this is very tough to do, and requires a lot of tolerance and patience. This approach can help avoid conflict between negotiators and provides a range of benefits to all parties involved.

Understanding the companies goals and vision is very important. Sometimes when there is a conflict the best strategy is to start thinking outside the box and see if there are ways to improve the situation through an upgrade or merger of systems. Sometimes you will find that solving one issue makes the original issue irrelevant.

One often overlooked dimension is that there may be some compromised "mashup" that is better than either side's initial position. Asking both sides if they can honestly see whatever positive attributes the other has and listing them could be a good step towards ultimate cooperation on a hybrid that would knock either initial proposal to the waste bin.

No one likes compromise especially if you are the Network Administrator. You know what you need and when you need it. The unfortunate truth is that there are multiple pieces to a companies “Gears” and they all need to be in sync for the whole thing to work. Write down a list of absolute essentials that are needed at any cost, then start looking at it from a different perspective and envision what your network would look like without certain pieces. Can you break down essential upgrades in sections? Can you find more cost effective solutions to other tasks, like maybe outsourcing? Once you have a solid understanding of the bigger picture, then you can properly discuss options to work with.

I recommend creating an organised resolution plan with specific phases and dates. In my perspective, continuous communication is essential to ensuring that everyone is on the same page throughout the process. Regular follow-up meetings and feedback sessions allow you to resolve problems quickly, building openness and confidence.

Implementing a weekly follow up with the teams involved will help make sure everyone is on the same page and the policy and procedures that were created are doing what they were designed to do. Open communication is the key to making any project work, without communication it is doomed from the start.
