How can you create a work environment that is both challenging and rewarding?

Setting SMART goals is like having a roadmap to success. I used to just wing it at work, but once I started setting clear, achievable goals, my productivity and sense of accomplishment skyrocketed . Now, I'm all about getting my team on board with SMART goals too.

I have found over the years that many “leaders” do not understand and forget-the “how and who”. It’s important yes follow the format “SMART”, notice I used the word “follow” does a leader follow or lead? In my opinion a good leader should own it and adapt the structure to the person and to do this you have to understand how each individual is driven and adapt to them to get the outcome you want to achieve not the other way around, you can end up trying to jam square pegs into round holes, doesn’t mean the person isn’t suited to the role it means not everyone is driven by the same thing or can work within the same structure. In summary it’s vital to understand your audience and adapt to your audience when setting goals and challenges.

We all have different comfort levels with autonomy and risk, which is where communication builds the bridge. For some autonomy is being able to do something completely different, for others it is playing with different ways of doing something that we do all the time. Leaders who engage employees in meaningful conversations can discover where people are and what they would like to do. The possibilities are endless, but the risk doesn't have to be. Risk can be managed inside the conversations with clear guidelines. Each successful foray into new territory builds trust and enables more risk, for those who want it. Everyone wins.

Foster innovation through brainstorming challenges. Set aside time each week for the team to creatively tackle problems outside their normal work. Cross-train employees to develop special projects groups. Have individuals dedicate a portion of time to mastering complementary skills sets. Create purpose-driven "stretch assignments." Align individual development goals with strategic business needs that go beyond day-to-day responsibilities. Support passion projects for new value creation!

This can be defined as a space in which people can share ideas, challenge each other, create and innovate, ask for what they need, and say what they need to say without the fear of being shamed or reprimanded. Psychologically safe environments allow people to debate, challenge each other, raise their standards and be held accountable, all the while feeling empowered that their voice matters and is valued.
