How can you create wireframes that are easy to read for all stakeholders?

Grid systems are very important to maintain the visual structure and consistency of our design. It helps to align all objects within the frame. Be careful when constructing a grid that's suitable for your content.

Na minha experiência o mais importante nessa escolha é alinhar com a equipe de desenvolvimento, pois um dos erros mais comuns é os designers de produto estarem usando uma grid diferente dos desenvolvedores front-end. Pois no final, a infidelidade do produto com os layouts/protótipos acontece por falta desse alinhamento, o que dependendo dos stakeholders podem gerar desgastes.

A grid system is a fundamental design tool, organizing content into columns and rows for visual clarity and consistency. It enhances alignment, balance, and overall layout structure in graphic design, web design, and print media.

Maintaining detail is absolutely important. At the same time it is important to keep the detail intact based on whether you are taking the Lo-fi route or Hi-fi. Never mix and match between the two routes. Often I have seen people forget that they had started with a lo-fi wireframe and in the middle shifted to hi-fi and vice versa. Also maintaining unique symbols to define images, videos, carousel, text paragraphs etc. Are important. A keen eye should be kept that the symbols and icons should not change. Using a standard UI kit also helps a lot.

I believe that wireframes for complex and dynamic systems needs the right selection of its fidelity. In my experience, depending upon the stage and type of user testing the right fidelity of wireframes will make it more usable and aacessible. Lets understand it with an example; in initial stage of user testing with smaller group of users, low fidelity (paper wireframes) wireframes with annotations, remarks and instructions, the process can be made usable and accessible. Whereas for a later and final level of testing of features and dynamics of the product, a high fidelity wireframes is best choice.

When wireframing, choosing the right level is very important too. Because it is the exploring and testing idea of our design. The lo-fi is simple and easy to understand, but the hi-fi wireframe is closely matched and feels like a final product. So high-fidelity wireframes are the best level to check for final-level feature testing.

Adding clear notes to wireframes ensures the team (design peers, PM, BA, developers, etc) easily grasps the design direction reducing unnecessary back-and-forth among the team. For example: - This is a scenario where no results are found for the search. - Developers can refer xyz link to refer to this component. - Button will be enabled only when the changes are done. - Alert will stay on this page until all orders are updated. - Old flow had 3 CTA’s, going ahead we will have 2 CTA’s.

1. You can create a local parent component for labels to keep the styling similar across the product. 2. Multiple stakeholders might visit your design files. Add labels to indicate the user (Eg: customer view/admin view), stage of wireframe (Eg: exploration 1/low fidelity), status of feature (Eg: Design in progress/dev ready). 3. When designing for accessibility, you can also add label (eg: Alt Text for Images - A women using laptop) on the wires for better collaboration with team. 4. If something is overlooked during the review, the labels provide stakeholders with an easy way to grasp the context.

Not just labels but including a short tutorial/legend explaining how the design that the stakeholder views the wireframes in works and what different tags or labels might imply would make your wireframes a lot more legible and easier to navigate through.

Introducing visual cues (arrows or dots) at specific points directs attention and saves time when reviewing design, content, or elements. In design tools like Figma, using sections helps to organize the wireframes. Adding descriptive names to the sections contributes to a better understanding among the team.

Visual cues and feedback are like the unsung heroes of a great user experience. Something as simple as colors, shapes, or even a subtle animation guides the flow of a design. I usually create a basic prototype as well at the wireframe stage with subtle animations to make it easily understandable for stakeholders.

Show the prototypes in a device that is familiar to stakeholders, for some stakeholders seeing something in an environment that they are familiar (mobile, tablet) it makes them immerse more into the experience and see themselves using the solution that you are proposing.

Anyone can start using wireframes. You don’t need to have a certificate or degree in UX. Think about it like this - some information like lists are best shared through text in a document, data is best shared in a table in excel, and creative work is best shared through visual design. Most people will understand the message you are conveying through simple shapes and conveys a stronger connection to the material than just words or data alone.
