How can you create a sense of ownership for your team around a new strategic plan?

I believe that collaboration and co-authoring are essential when it comes to getting a team to buy into a larger plan. From my experience, it simply doesn’t work when staff feel like they’re outside the tent. When team members are actively involved in the planning process, they develop a sense of ownership and commitment to our objectives. It’s important to create an inclusive environment where everyone’s input is valued. When people feel included, they are more likely to engage with and support the overall plan. In short, by prioritizing collaboration and ensuring that everyone is "inside the tent," we can enhance buy-in and drive the success of our initiatives.

When do you need to "CREATE a sense of ownership"? When it's not inherently there. The premise of this question is that the manager who created the plan must find a way to bestow a "sense" of ownership to individuals who don't really own it, because they didn't create it. So, instead of involving, communicating, recognizing or aligning, better really make it theirs by giving them the responsibility to create or co-create it. You will not only automatically gain their SENSE of ownership, but their actual OWNERSHIP, with the added benefit that the plan will probably be way better than what you would have come up without them. The wider and deeper the pool of talent creating the plan - the better the outcome, and the easier to implement.

The best way to promote ownership is to foster collaboration and co-creation. Getting the team involved in the strategy before unveiling it is important, so their voices are heard, and actively shaped. It is possible to tap into a wide pool of talent and perspectives when we communicate openly and connect with each employee. Sharing the strategy; it must be a collective effort where everyone contributes. In addition to inspiring an individual sense of ownership, the collaborative approach ensures that the final plan is enhanced by the expertise of all participants. A true engagement process involves co-creation and the belief that the best outcomes emerge when everyone is invested in the strategy's success.

When I interviewed candidates, I looked for potential owners. People who could quickly learn and take charge of their gaining assignments. This assured me that their intelligence was engaged. When it came to sharing strategy with them, our dialogue was a spirited one as they were already thinking this way. Owners have strategic minds. They embrace the flow, make decisions, and act on them. Empower your team to be owners and watch them make the right things happen.

There are two important points. First, let the strategy define the WHY and WHAT and some high-level HOW. Then let the team figure out the HOW in detail. This way, the 'own' the pathway to implementation. Second, let the team do two-way-door decisions. these are decisions that can be reversed without major consequences - as compared to one-way-door decisions. As Jeff Bezos rightly remarked, companies tend to make two-way-door decisions with a one-way-door mindset. This disempowers people and slows down the process
