How can you create an inclusive and diverse employee advocacy program?

Inclusion comes first. Your people should feel that they belong and that their voice has meaning. In the past we have involved our people at all levels, not just management on a committee, to contribute and formulate what our diversity and inclusion initiatives are wanted, and needed. I also created one of the first Chief Diversity Officers in the province to add to our senior leadership team. Everybody needs to buy in and be a part of this.

More than a program, I consider this needs to be the company culture than an employee expirience day by day. This include being inclusive from the outset…the recruitment process and then in all of the company dynamics: Decision making processes, development programs, ways of working, collaborative work, among others.

Choose people from different colors and cultures to form an ad hoc team that would create a corporate policy on Diversity, Equality and Inclusion. That way, you create a co-owned program that is best managed by those concerned. Of course, all this must be subject to top management approval in compliance with their Vision, Mission and Value statements.

Remember the voices of those who do not feel comfortable participating in groups, may not get around to answering surveys, may be experiencing barriers you haven't guessed yet etc. Keep your ear to the ground and remember the value of informal conversations. Check in constantly with people managers/HR to get a feel for whether there are underlying issues in teams etc. that you need to be aware of in your messaging. Recognition and rewards are great, but how are these being decided? Do public announcements boost general employee morale across the board? What about those that experience RSD etc.? Read fully up on what might prevent diverse voices speaking up and out. Only then can you truly create structures that include them.

We have found that all change begins with mindset and self awareness. It it imperative that we bring in training that begins with self assessment. From there, the guidance can address the teams needs in an in depth way. The ability to bring this into the fold in a non judgemental way will heed the best outcomes for your team.
