I personally do not use a color wheel... it seems very planned and calculated. I usually sample colors from the existing photo or inspiration graphic. You can sample any color down to a pixel so why not use the palette you have and that way the colors all complement each other. If you want to keep the image light or dark there are plenty of samples you can do to make it all work. Then if you really want to mess with things, go have fun with hues and change things up. There are no rules in creation!
