How can you create effective slide designs with images and graphics?

In my case, I utilize both slides and a whiteboard in my presentations. Slides offer me a structured, visual support system for my content, while a whiteboard allows for spontaneous illustrations and interactive engagement. This combination enhances understanding and engagement, making my presentations more impactful and memorable.

I find it very effective to use images in presentations. The images have to be relevant and the message has to be self-explanatory and understood by the viewer within seconds from looking at it. If the viewer has to focus to understand the message behind the graphic, it distracts them from the message that you are verbally trying to convey.

Once a senior executive in my office was presenting yearly performance to the employees. He used a full screen data slide but didn't explain it. I could see audience were loosing interest in listening to him as they were not able to understand his data. Perhaps he thought, the data was self explanatory or audience would ask questions. But nothing happened. It's very important to know that slides are mere addition to your presentation, but you are the speaker. It's your responsibility to explain everything you have put on your slide to keep your presentation interesting and engaging. Also tell stories about the data and people will love your presentation.

As a teacher I always say, "By the time you open the book, it's too late." You need to engage the students first, and elicit their knowledge before tapping into the lesson. The same thing goes for a slide show. If you engage the audience first, then you have a chance of them following your slides. Go straight to the slides and your audience is done with you.

Maintain a consistent theme in terms of colors, fonts, and layout across your slides for a professional look. Avoid clutter. Each slide should convey a single idea. Use concise text and compelling visuals. Prioritize information with a clear hierarchy. Important points should stand out, and less critical details can be presented more subtly. Select readable fonts. Stick to a maximum of two or three font types to maintain a cohesive design. Practice your presentation to ensure a smooth flow. This will also help you gauge the effectiveness of your slide designs. You should keep in mind that the goal is to convey your message clearly and engage your audience.

I am going to be a bit contrarian here. I teach a class around the country and I intentionally do NOT use a powerpoint at all. Instead, I use a whiteboard and markers as this allows me to go where the class needs to go. Unless you know what your class needs, creating slides, even slides with high-quality graphics, assumes that you know what they need and sets you up to have a class that feels like "death by powerpoint."
