How can you create a culture of recognition in EdTech?

The fundamental factor underlying connecting and reconnecting is recognition. Rewards and recognition foster respect among coworkers and inspire them to improve their performance, even if it means learning a fresh perspective. Furthermore, the ed-tech sector must acknowledge that teachers deserve recognition for their contributions to forming futures.

In my opinion, establishing a culture of recognition in EdTech involves regularly acknowledging and celebrating achievements, whether big or small, among educators, students, and administrators. Implementing a structured rewards system, such as monthly awards or peer recognition programs, fosters a positive environment that encourages continuous innovation and dedication within the educational technology community.

It is important to encourage team members to express gratitude regularly. Foster a positive and inclusive work environment where collaboration and support are encouraged. Leaders should tie recognition efforts to the core values of the company. When recognizing achievements, highlight how they align with the organization's mission, vision, and values. Provide training on effective recognition. Equip leaders and team members with the skills to express appreciation in a meaningful and impactful way. Involve employees in the recognition process by seeking their input. This can include gathering ideas for recognition programs, feedback on existing initiatives, and preferences for how they would like to be recognized.

The main purpose of feedback and recognition is the driving force of any individual looking to improve their work. Providing Constructive Feedback/Recognition is important to help drive awareness, change and progress especially for Students and parents. Giving recognition allows the student or people involved to see their value and the effort of their hard work.

EdTech simplifies the recognition of learners' efforts. Now, I can effortlessly provide feedback to a guardian on a learner's outstanding performance with just a few clicks, eliminating the need to wait for open day. Additionally, it offers the flexibility to deliver personalized feedback to learners, acknowledging their efforts in a more individualized manner, rather than using generic responses.

I prefer to take the social media approach/Boy Scout approach…BADGES! Everyone loves badges!!! Implement a system of digital badges and certificates that students can earn for various achievements, skills, or milestones. This not only recognizes their efforts but also provides tangible proof of their accomplishments.

Maybe by the following ways 1. Simply thank you and show your care to family members we take for granted. 2. Appreciate mail or text to colleagues and juniors. Thanks and gratitude mail or text to mentors and seniors. 3. Acknowledging someone's work in public. 4. Officially putting acknowledgment in reports/papers, etc. 5. Presenting Award/Reward in public.

EdTech is allowing for private comments and feedback being added privately. Students and staff are enjoying this feature especially for those students who are more uncomfortable speaking about their work.

Badging is extremely popular in EdTech. From Google for Education Level 1 to Microsoft Certified Educator, teachers appreciate the recognition they receive from EdTech that they may not receive from their admin. The important thing if designing a recognition system is to not make it worthless. You want it to be obtainable but if people get a badge just for signing up for a mailing list, it doesn't show recognition of skill.

Recognizing a team’s value is always a must in any organization. Most of the times we experience those recognitions (badges or certificates) come from outside organizations, more than the institution we educators work from. Creating a culture in which our efforts, advances and experiences are recognized, leads to further growth, more passionate individuals that at the same time will encourage students and families to experience the unknown. Now the question is: What do we value the most, so we award individuals with those recognitions?

In my experience, as Apple Education Teacher Trainer I love the Apple Teacher badges and also have seen schools having Apple Teacher wall showcasing the achievement . I have also printed stickers for the iPad and MacBook for teacher’s to earn

I like a peer recognition system because some teachers are outgoing and others are more introverted. Maybe a badging system can be designed so that every teacher can earn a few.

Public Acknowledgments that are already plugged into the school ecosystem are the best way of building recognition. Use school websites, newsletters, or social media platforms to publicly acknowledge and celebrate student and teacher achievements in EdTech projects. This can include showcasing exceptional work or highlighting innovative uses of technology in the classroom.

The biggest obstacle is culture. Most schools do not want a "star" system to highlight top teachers. This robs people of affirmation and suppresses the drive to be better. Despite the lack of formal recognition, everyone eventually figures out the strengths and weaknesses of teachers. Who is the best resource for classroom management? Who is the best at designing engaging lessons and projects? Who is the best at designing creative assessments?

Recognition systems are often disconnected from the people they are intended to highlight. One way to overcome this is to identify the ways that individuals want to be recognized. This might seem daunting inside a very large system (or even one that is medium in size); however, the process of being asked is, in itself, recognition. From there setting up a couple of recognition systems becomes an easier path and you can begin to avoid pitfalls such as not being able to recognize everyone. You also can create multiple opportunities for people to work together on recognition teams.

We may consider the following factors. 1. Genunity of the work 2. Recognition should bring out an aspiration to do more good 3. It should be a fair and transparent process 4. Recognition should set a high standard for excellence 5. It should be done promptly, or it loses its importance.

A few more ideas to build a culture of recognition in engaging ways that are inclusive: 1. Student-Led Tech Teams: Establish student-led technology teams that help peers and teachers with tech-related issues. Recognize these students for their leadership and technical skills. 2. Interactive Learning Competitions: Organize school-wide or class-based competitions that encourage creative and effective use of technology in learning projects. This not only motivates students but also celebrates their technological prowess.

I believe a recognition system can mostly motivate learners if used correctly. But still, we need to be careful because it can potentially lose some learners' motivation.
