It's about Community. In my working career, I've seen the good, the bad and the ugly. To illustrate: The good (great) came from leaders who led by example, knew how to connect well with people, and connected people WITH EACH OTHER - especially important in Community building The bad came from ignorant leaders who were willing to listen and adjust their approach The ugly were simply not fit to hold a position of authority and responsibility The majority start in one of the first two, and shift over time. When building Community, this needs to be at the heart of it.

If one is going to lead a team of internal communications professionals, I cannot emphasise enough how critical it is to not just walk the talk but to connect heart to heart with stakeholders.

If you're not gonna be transparent and honest, you may not even wanna get started. To be influential and effective, it's necessary that people see you as truthful, authentic, someone who has clear values and act on them on a regular basis. Whatever it is that you're gonna say, make sure it is real, that's it feels real, and that it reflects your values as they were expressed in the past.

Create a focus group with a well defined objective. Be prompt to acknowledge inputs. Be open to feedback. Most importantly, when you acknowledge inputs and feedback, indicate how this feedback will be utilised and how it will effect the overall outcomes. Four powerful words you could use in your opening message: What do YOU think?

It's important to first of all communicate openly which starts with providing an environment that allows feedback and interaction amongst staff. 2. Have accessible channels of sharing information that provide an avenue for people to express themselves as well as receive information from relevant leadership centres. 3. Communicate with clarity always 4. Don't try to gag people or you will never receive feedback at all. 5. Act upon the feedback you receive which shows commitment to support and improve.
