Have a clear understanding of the job requirements and desired qualifications. Next, create a process that includes resume screening, initial interviews, skills assessments, and behavioural assessments. Incorporate a variety of evaluation methods such as structured interviews, role plays, to assess different aspects of the candidate's suitability. Ensure consistency and fairness by using standardised evaluation criteria and involving multiple evaluators when possible. Finally, gather feedback from all interviewers involved in the hiring process to continually refine and improve the evaluation process for future candidates. Enhancing the evaluation process with a thorough reference check would further improve its effectiveness.

I think all too often we are too narrow focused when evaluating candidates. While a resume and skills are important, equally (if not more important) is WHO that candidate is. What is it about their background that brings value to the team from day one, and allows them to feel like they belong out the gate. Skills and a resume don't tell the whole story of someone's value.

Screening candidates could be really difficult, especially if you don't have set clear evaluation criteria and methods. According to my professional experience, it is important right from CV screening to map as much useful information as possible, aggregating it with data collected during job interview. Of course, there is no such thing as the ideal candidate for all positions, so it is necessary to compare the information gained with the objectives of the search (e.g., what is the distinctive experience I am looking for? are there any specific professional certifications for that role? what aptitudes are considered preferable for that work environment?). Finally, 4 eyes see better than 2, as searching alone could lead to bias.
