How can you create accountability for students in online learning?

Involving students in the process by asking for their expectations and goals fosters a sense of ownership and responsibility, as they actively participate in shaping their learning journey. And it provides a roadmap for both students and instructors, ensuring they understand what is required for success. Clear expectations encompass various aspects of the course, from assignments to participation guidelines. By making these expectations measurable and aligned with course outcomes, students have a clear understanding of what is expected of them. Overall, clear expectations establish a foundation for accountability, reducing confusion and promoting a more structured and effective online learning experience.

Expectations have to be established from the first lecture until the last final/assignment! These expectations must include class attendance, participation, and a clear and concise rubric for every deliverable (assignments, projects, quizzes, and exams). Student expectations should also be taken into account. I often take about 5-10 minutes out of my lectures to conversate with my students to discuss their objectives, questions, and/or progress throughout the semester in this class and elsewhere. Take for instance a score of 80%; a student might interpret this as excellent given the difficulty of the homework, but if they see that it places them at the bottom of the ranking, it provides a more accurate understanding of their current position. At times, an 80% score might be at the top too. Rankings not only add a gamification element, but they also enhance the transparency of the grading process.
