It’s important not to overcomplicate your approach to a panel interview. It’s simply an interview with more than one interviewer. It normally happens towards the end of a recruitment process, and often, you’re only invited to attend if you’re the preferred candidate. So, if you’ve got a panel, you’re probably pretty good as an interviewee, and the interviewers are normally hoping that you’ll do well. Prepare thoroughly and enjoy yourself. Finally, the biggest panel mistake I see is the interviewee directing all their answers to the most senior person in the room, regardless who asked the question. Direct your answer to the questioner whilst making occasional eye contact with all members of the panel.

There are serious pros to a panel interview… higher likelihood of striking real rapport because there’s more people to jive with. Multiple interviewers gives insight into the “working” corp culture. (They are demonstrating in front of you). Different people bring different energy so you’re able to showcase your professionalism AND light-heartedness; your astute attn to detail AND your flexibility, etc.

Avoid trying to be the ‘loudest voice’ in a group interview. Instead, stand out by being the most positive, constructive and collaborative member of the group.

Focus on your target: the hiring team, not the competition. The team will make you an offer, the other candidates absolutely will not. Proving you’re better than the person next to you isn’t as valuable as proving you are closely aligned with the business mission. Prep yourself to the max.

During group discussions, contribute thoughtfully, listen actively to others, and support your peers. Be clear and confident when it’s your turn to lead or present. The goal is to demonstrate that you can work well with others while being assertive and decisive when needed. Review the organisation's competency framework and consider the values it might be testing. Much of this will be about your human skills, how you interact with others, and how you personify the organisation's values.

Video interviews will be less threatening and intimidating if you practice. You can become more comfortable by recording yourself on your phone, conducting a one-person Zoom session, or working with a coach. Be mindful of any bad remote habits you may have developed while using Zoom or Microsoft Teams for virtual meetings. Test your internet connection before your interview. If you have had connectivity issues in the past, consider conducting your interview from a more reliable location. Consider checking your internet speed through Speedtest.net. For best results, your service speeds should be 10-25+ Mbps for downloads and at least 3 Mbps for uploads.

One of the nost important and most overlooked items is camera placement. You should make sure that you are dead center of the screen. The camera should not be placed too high where you appear to be looking up or too low where you appear to be looking down. You should appear to be looking right at the interviewer Set the camera at eye level so your posture is straight and you are not hunched over.

Prior to your big day: 1. Set up a background image or check in on the background of your video setting. Is it messy can it be spruced up. Research has shown that people will look behind you as humans are naturally curious. 2. Do a technology rehearsal with you camera to check the overall appearance of the setting. You can utilize zoom, Google meets, or your computers recording software. Review the results and make changes to perfect the end result. 3. Practice with a friend, with general questions this will help you be more comfortable behind camera.

Mastering video interviews requires preparation. Test your equipment, internet, and platform beforehand. Choose a quiet, well-lit space for a professional backdrop. Dress appropriately and maintain eye contact with the camera or interviewer. Speak clearly, smile, and convey enthusiasm. End with a polite thank you and a follow-up message. Overcoming technical challenges and presenting yourself professionally in a virtual setting demonstrates adaptability and effective communication skills.

If someone is going to be doing videos on a somewhat consistent basis, I would recommend a microphone to connect to their device, especially if they will work from a laptop. A separate microphone provides better sound quality for the conversation. You can find one which uses a USB or a regular microphone port. I would also recommend selecting one that is directional to keep it from picking up other noises in the area. I use a Samson Q9U and love it. You can also use clip on lavalier microphones when recording from your phone or tablet. You don't need an expensive set. You can buy a wired lavalier for less than $20. It is significantly better audio than through the regular microphone on the device.

The interview is one of the only parts of the job seeking lifecycle you can control… You’ll know who you’re meeting with, interviewer X; what you’re going to talk about, open role; and have the luxury of time to practice your delivery of that info. Prep for the interview so that you welcome it and showcase your poise.
