Map out current process step through VSM highlighting NVAs, Kiazens, redundant items, duplicity and pain areas for next level of analysis. Identify key metrics, perform baseline and figure out your Goal. Adopt DMAIC for complex problems and idenfy solution through design thinking. Then implement and track action item-owner. Lastly deploy control machanism to sustain your result

One definite thing one should also do is to adapt to a notation like BPMN or EPC and use a tool like Visio, ARIS, Signavio and so on to build the process and establish the relationship between each model

In my experience, mapping out the current process design can help identify redundency and additional steps that could potentially be eliminated or reorganized to create a more streamlined flow. It also helps to identify any gaps in the process that may require a brainstormed solution.

In my experience, the most commonly missed aspect of continuous improvement is the word “continuous”. It is not enough to make a change. Continuous improvement should not be viewed globally, every process should go though its own continuous improvement. There has to be a cadence to review changes and CONTINUE to improve them. If you do not intentionally review the improvements you make, then you are not continuously improving, you are just making small unrelated improvements.

In my own experience, my institution is continuously working to move processes outside of Workday into Workday. This entire shift requires research, investigation, creativity, testing and sometimes compromise on behalf of developers and stakeholders alike.
