How can you continue your education in Electrical Design?

Well, continuing education is a lifelong process, and staying up to date with the latest advancements in electrical design is the key to excel in your career. Some remedies to continue your career growth. ?In the early stages of your career, consider switching between 2-3 different companies to acquire versatile engineering knowledge. Avoid getting stuck in one company or area. ?First decide in your early career, which area of electrical engineering ignites you. ?Gain hands-on experience in your preferred area of interest. ?Pursue a higher degree after gaining 2-3 years of practical experience in that area. ?Stay updated on recent trends and advancements by following blogs, relevant pages, podcasts etc. ?Take courses and training programs.

When I started as an Electrical Design Engineer intern at an EPC, I was put in charge of designing LV Distribution Boards and Junction Boxes. Its great to do courses but try to get some hands-on experience. * Try to get hold of your household DB schematics and try to understand them. * Refer to IEC standards for electrical installations starting at an LV level. * Attempt load balancing calculations while considering 3-phase lines. * Use a multimeter to ring out circuitry against a schematic to experience an as-built DB compared to a schematic. (trace the connections). * Exercise safety when working with electrical circuits. * A good place to learn about protection and meter technology for free would be SEL's website.

Keep up to date on Professional Society and National Standards and Codes. Make sure designs meet local codes as well. Designs must also be stringently checked for compliance.

After being in other industries, I came back to engineering and needed to sharpen up so I completed a host of short courses ranging from summary courses touching on many aspects and some more in detail such as protection of HV switchgear. This really helped to align so that I could get into design engineering a lot quicker. There are a lot of low cost online courses, and once you have access you can refer back to those courses when you start working with certain topics if they are not immediately relevant. The next step is to advance my career in engineering so I will look to do my masters in engineering. Due to the heavy workload this will need to be a flexible, online course where I can work around my free time.

From time to time certain institutions put out webinars about how to do studies, and use certain software, for they do a sample class, which you can do to be able to see if you would like to take a course with that institution or if the program is something you need to be able to make the corresponding investment. There is a little bit of everything concerning podcasts, although I consider that the best ones are the videos in which they teach you how to do something specific, for example how to do a grounding study.

Over the Years in Construction and Maintenance I have learned from Older Guys to Helpers in the field. Also, picked up tricks, ideas, and alternate solutions from other trades as well. Bottom Line, You are NEVER to old to learn, and try each day to learn something new.

I have always found it more valuable to have a mentor and peers that you can call up with questions, than to have everything memorized yourself.

Practical experience beats all the bits of paper every time courses from university by definition are out of touch with whats happeining in the electrical design industry get out of the office and down to the shop floor/installation that's where the real learning takes place

As a practitioner of electrical design, you can design across different industries (I.e automotive, aerospace, industrial, etc) to see what the latest techniques are being employed across different sectors for a more experiential development approach. From my own experience, I was able to bring in symbology that didn’t exist in one sector from another to get a solution delivered, provided that it was approved before release.
