How can you conduct user research and empathy interviews for Product R&D?

I remember a lesson from an MRS course I took nearly 20 years ago, which was taught by one of my own research mentors. He said that the real value of research is in how it can be adaptable. As the market and products change, so should our aproach to research. This wisdom remains relevant, underscoring the necessity for flexibility and a user-centric focus. While clarity in our research goals is crucial, it shouldn't be mistaken for inflexibility in seeing the outcomes. Over the years, I've realised that often it's the surprising finding that provides the most important insights.

Defining research goals is crucial. Without clarity, you risk collecting irrelevant data. Goals must be: Specific: Pinpoint what you want to learn, e.g., "Identify top 3 user pain points in online hotel booking." Relevant: Align goals with your product strategy and KPIs to ensure the research informs meaningful decisions. Measurable: Know how you'll gauge success, whether through changes in user metrics or feature validation. Realistic: Make sure goals are achievable with your resources to avoid inconclusive results. Aligning these elements ensures your research yields actionable insights, streamlining your product development process.

Preparation: Test research tools beforehand to avoid mid-study adjustments. Ensure clarity in questions and functionality in prototypes. Ethics: Secure informed consent, respecting privacy and confidentiality to build trust and ensure honest feedback. Engagement: Maintain a respectful and attentive stance to encourage candid responses. Questioning: Use open-ended questions to dig deeper into user experiences, capturing nuances. Documentation: Record data meticulously using notes, audio, or video for robust analysis later. Executing the research well ensures that your planning translates into actionable insights, making your R&D process more effective.
