Assign roles, e.g., a Data Protection Officer, and develop clear policies on data handling. I agree compliance is crucial, but equally important is fostering a privacy culture through regular employee training. In my experience, some of the most important aspects when conducting a data privacy audit are: 1) drawing from all available sources (e.g. audit function memorandum, cybersecurity test results, Risk function investigation results) enabling synergies and focusing one's resources; 2) reasoning in a rolling plan perspective (e.g. on a three-year basis), also setting medium-long term objectives (e.g. in my opinion, it is not necessary to carry out an investigation on a low-risk area, if it has already been inspected last year); 3) following the identification of a finding, remedial actions must then be defined, involving the structures that are the owners of that task, otherwise opening findings could also prove counterproductive.
