The most important thing to remember is that your actions speak much louder than your words. The second thing to remember is that there are no secrets, even if you don't speak about them. The words you use will likely be forgotten and discounted, especially when times are tough and uncertain. What people will remember is the way you behave, the things you focus on in your meetings, and the general sense of what seems to be really important when push comes to shove. So, don't just map out your verbal communications - map out your behaviors and how you want to model your message, and then figure out the real words that match up with those behaviors - that way people will start to believe what you say.

Research who they are and what their needs are using market research and ensure you have the tools and knowledge you need to understand your audience and grow your brand accordingly.

Whether it’s investors, employees, partners or even regulators, everyone has a different ‘stake’ in your company’s success. Understanding the motivations of different groups is key to allow you to adjust your messaging to the issues they will care about. And if you’re not sure what their motivations are: ask!

The strategy ultimately has some vision of a future endpoint and working back from this. If you start then with an end in mind and break down the steps needed to get there into micro steps. Using frameworks such as SWOT, PEST, etc., are helpful in creative a critical analysis of the situation.

Whatever framework you use, make sure it addresses the WHAT, WHY, AND HOW of your plan in the simplest manner possible so that it is understandable not just by your head office team, but even the last person on the ground. Emphasize on WHY change is necessary and that needs to be communicated in a crystal clear manner. You can use STAR or 7S or even just be bold to invent one of your own. Whatever framework you use, make sure it is specific, action oriented, clear, time bound and most importantly authentic and the leadership should have the skin in the game.

I am firmly convinced that the foundation of successful strategy and its execution is anchored in clear intent, a sense of urgency, well-defined objectives, and measurable key results. Central to this process is transparent communication, an indispensable element for the effective implementation of any strategy. Renowned frameworks such as the McKinsey 7-S Framework, OKRs (Objectives and Key Results), The Golden Circle, and the S-T-A-R model offer invaluable guidance in articulating business strategy to stakeholders comprehensively. It is essential that such communication meticulously addresses the 'Why,' 'How,' and 'What' of the business strategy, ensuring a coherent and persuasive narrative that aligns all parties towards a common vision.

In my experience through decades of leadership I recommend using meeting (in-person or virtual) to communicate uncertainty especially if this can have major changes or can cause confusion and disruption. Pros are - Nature of Issues: Complex issues requiring discussion, brainstorming, or decision-making. Audience: Appropriate for team meetings, department meetings, or cross-functional discussions. Advantages: Facilitates real-time interaction, collaboration, and immediate feedback. Putting human faces to uncertainty, presence of leadership can often provide assurance to team required to drive stability and resilience in difficult times.

I absolutely agree. Communication is the key. You show respect to the audience by being clear, consistent and confident. And the content you share must be clear and valuable. When it comes to communication in my life, I learned a valuable lesson some time ago from a fantastic tutor. The idea is: when writing or telling a story (providing information) always imagine that your audience doesn’t know anything about the topic you write or talk about. So you provide your audience with such a detailed and understandable information, that they have zero questions after reading/ listening to the story. That’s the communication rule I’m following and it works perfectly!

When developing a strategy, seeking feedback and genuinely considering them is important. Also, collecting feedback isn't the purpose here, but it is important to have a healthy discussion with the people or their representatives to understand their thought process and demonstrate inclusion. This will help in understanding the mood at the ground level, increase pride and the sense of belongingness within the people as they will feel connected and respected. This will be of great tool in increasing their buy-in of the plan. Do not communicate to keep them falsely assured as that will do more harm than good. Whatever the situation, it needs to be communicated consistently and repeatedly but with a high doze of hope and confidence.

If doubts overwhelm your vision and goals, consider an alternative path. Would you truly be better off in a role free of uncertainty? Happier? Avoid idealizing a predictable world. Do remember that we are dealing with humans first and products second. People have emotions, motivations, opinions, and personal responsibilities. - The plan and it's communication has to be authentic, simple, consistent and most importantly be developed keeping people in mind. - Please don't be ambigous and secretive during this process as it will not be good for both the parties. - Push people to be creative and bold with the proposed solutions. - Whatever you do, do not hamper the sense of pride of the people as that will do a lot of long term damage to the company than any short term gains.

When communicating the strategy to collagues within the organisation, as well as outlining where the organisation is going and plans to get there, it's important that employees are invited to help shape the role they need to play in delivering success. Finding ways to involve them in the journey will help drive a sense of strategic ownership and commitment.

Regardless of the framework, communication of strategy should start with clarity of the strategic purpose of the firm as the North Star of thinking, decision-making, and action-taking within a firm. Regardless of the channel, the strongest form of communication business leaders can use is that of leadership by example. Now, if at any time, clarity and consistency are great allies of communication, their role is exacerbated in times of uncertainty when people need constant reassurance and confirmation about the maintenance, adjustment, or shift in direction and priorities. Finally, while top-down communication is essential, bottom-up communication may be equally important to monitor the effectiveness of implementation in uncertainty.

Uncertain times call for even better communication. Teams are not sure, and the environment is chaotic, then any strategy discussion would add more suspicions on the results and progresses. We need to involve as many stakeholders as possible in building up the blocks, bits and pieces of the strategy. Once the strategy is finalized, we need to engage the right set of decision makers and impacted teams same time and make sure to reinforce the need, the benefits and the support that's needed to make it a success in difficult times.
