I like the suggestion of creating calculated fields in Pivot tables, but there are times when an audit trail is needed. Sometimes it may be better to create a field in the dataset or next to the Pivot Table so the formula results can be traced.

Use CONCATENATE, LEFT, RIGHT,and MID to create a "Primary Key" of several fields that can then be validated against or sorted by. CONCATENATE, LEFT, RIGHT,and MID can also be used in VLookup's first "Lookup_Value" clause for troublesome datasets - for example leading zeros may have been removed from some records, use the RIGHT or MID to validate them. Concatenate could be used to add them.
