How can you coach a leader transitioning to a new industry?

Understanding the why will help you guide your coachee into their desired career path. Is it a first hand experience that led them to choose this field? Is it watching someone else? What are the attributes in their current field they can bring and employ in the new field? What interests do they have outside of work that would lend well to this new field? What profiles or influencers do they follow in the new field that inspire them and why? Start with the why, you will uncover a lot of material you can use to help them reach their goals.

Skill Assessment: Identify transferable skills and areas requiring development for a seamless transition. Networking Guidance: Provide strategies for building a relevant network within the new industry. Cultural Adaptation: Guide in understanding and adapting to the new industry's culture and norms. TIP - Reflect on the past to illuminate the future. While it’s crucial to focus on the leader's aspirations and motivations for transitioning to a new industry, delving into their past experiences provides invaluable insights. Understanding where they come from, the lessons learned, successes, and challenges faced, offers a richer perspective on what drives them. This historical context can highlight patterns, strengths, and areas for growth, shaping a more informed and holistic coaching strategy. Ideally, a leader coming into a new industry is bringing strengths and skills that will enhance the team's experience and productivity. In my experience, considering how the strengths the leader possesses will impact the team, and bringing those to bear, is critical. Next, discover the ongoing challenges within the team/industry and learn how emotional intelligence (EI) will address those challenges. An EI assessment may give the leader a new awareness of areas that need attention. Building Decision-Making competencies, for instance, could give a leader an edge in stepping into a new industry role. Moving into a new industry is a means for stepping up EI strengths which carry across all types of roles.

TIP - Balance development with acceptance. In the transition to a new industry, leaders must recognize not only the skills and competencies they need to develop but also those gaps they should accept. While certain skills can be enhanced or acquired to meet new challenges, it's equally important to acknowledge and embrace areas where one may not excel. This acceptance isn't about settling but rather about focusing energy and resources on leveraging strengths and making strategic decisions about where to grow. Identifying what to develop versus what to accept helps in crafting a realistic and effective action plan, ensuring leaders invest in areas with the greatest impact on their success and fulfillment.

When coaching a leader transitioning to a new industry, focus on bridging the gap between their existing strengths and the demands of the new role. In my experience, It's essential to capture the leaders innate strengths and understand his or her core values. Once strengths and values are identified one can create a bespoke strategy to use this to amplify his/ her influence and create a roadmap ahead.

The learning plan for your transitioning leader should be a collaborative effort. Identify key skills and industry knowledge gaps. Craft a personalized learning journey with specific actions like attending industry conferences, online courses, or mentorship programs. Utilize resources like industry publications, competitor analysis, and internal subject matter experts. Finally, establish realistic timelines for knowledge acquisition, allowing them to integrate learnings while performing their current role. This comprehensive plan equips the leader for success in their new industry.

To foster a growth mindset and resilience in leaders transitioning to new industries, celebrate their existing strengths and emphasize how these skills can be adapted to the new environment. Encourage a "learning through experience" approach by providing opportunities for experimentation, exploration, and reflection. Offer mentorship and connections with individuals who successfully navigated similar transitions. Regularly acknowledge their progress, highlighting how their efforts are contributing to their growth and adaptation. Curiosity is a super power when transitioning to a new industry - you won't have all the answers and that is a good thing. It encourages you to approach things with a growth mindset, and not be put off by the fact you don't have all the context you would usually. It also makes you a better people leader as it forces you to take on more of a coaching role rather than a 'fixer' - you can use your leadership capabilities and growth mindset to coach your team to move things forward and deliver, without you getting sucked into all the detail.

Asking if they have experienced such movement in the past, whether in their own journey or that of others close to them, and do they recall what actions helped to smoothen the transition journey, - can be helpful in encouraging reflection.
