How can you coach effectively in a remote environment?

Coaching remotely is an important element in broader hybrid work environment. It’s necessitated for multiple reasons, Physical space, scheduling, cost, availability and experience of working with technology etc. If planned, executed and followed through well remote coaching can be a great supplement to F2F arrangements

Whether in person or remote, clarification of your goals is both essential and non-negotiable to ensure a successful coaching engagement. The process shouldn't change in terms of how you (the coach) engage with your client to ascertain their goals and desires while working with them on clarifying them and outlining a roadmap to success.

Visual tools can make remote coaching so much more effective. In fact, they make face to face coaching more effective too! So much is spoken about in a coaching session that the content can get lost or forgotten without good systems to capture information. I take short-hand notes in sessions and put together notes from this afterwards. I find it invaluable in helping my reflection, It is of huge benefit to the client also. I use tools for whatever competency the client and I might be working on...for example I use a visual activity canvas to work out issues and opportunities related to Time Management and I use change management models like Kotter's to structure discussions around change management. This works really well.

Remote coaching undoubtedly relies on technology, but selecting the right tools is a strategic decision. I consider factors such as the nature of coaching sessions, coachee comfort with technology, and desired outcomes. Video conferencing can mimic face-to-face interaction, enhancing engagement and rapport. For deeper discussions, I opt for phone calls to ensure a confidential environment. Meanwhile, quick check-ins can be efficiently handled through messaging apps or emails. Tailoring my approach to leverage these platforms fosters a seamless coaching experience that aligns with my clients' needs and preferences.

I’m finding that busy clients prefer teleconference versus platforms such as Zoom especially when there is little access to internet available in the workplace. If the client is reviewing documents, Zoom is best suitable for sharing screens yet that only applies where internet connection is readily accessible.

Building rapport and trust in a remote coaching setup requires intentional efforts. I prioritize open communication, actively listening to my coachee's concerns, and validating their experiences. I make sure to create a safe space where they feel comfortable sharing their challenges and goals. By maintaining a consistent schedule of virtual meetings, I reinforce reliability and dedication. Additionally, using video calls instead of just audio cultivates a more personal connection, as body language and facial expressions are vital cues. Sharing relevant experiences or insights helps bridge the virtual gap, demonstrating my commitment to their growth journey and building a strong foundation of trust.

Adapting my coaching style for remote sessions involves embracing flexibility. I recognize that coachees may be juggling diverse responsibilities, so I prioritize being accommodating with scheduling. Clarity is key; I streamline my communication to ensure messages are succinct and easily digestible. By employing creative techniques like virtual whiteboards or interactive platforms, I keep the engagement dynamic and engaging. My approach acknowledges the unique challenges of remote coaching, allowing me to support coachees effectively on their growth journey.

Adapting one’s coaching style to suit in virtual space is a critical improvisation. One has to start intentional on a couple tools and skills they would be employing in virtual coaching. I prefer to contain coaching sessions to 45min as holding interest beyond this is a challenge. The delivery and deployment of an assessment and feedback tool can be thought to sit before actual session. Keeping the conversation in such a way that puts the client to Co-create the experience is important.
