The first question should be "What question are you trying to answer?" Are we in compliance? Where is the contaminant located? Is anyone at risk? What is the degree of exposure? Are controls adequate? Everything flows from this and all to often I ask this question when people come calling for help and they don't have any idea. Start here first.

Both methods normally stress the importance of sampling at the weakest points in a system in relations to desired contamination. Good protocols can include multiple samples at each location and consistant sampling methods across all locations.

Aside from Industry standard guidance, generally speaking, most will begin with higher than normal frequency of sampling (hourly, shift, daily, weekly) in order to begin to understand their system. As that data becomes more routine and shows consistancy, the frequency of sampling is often then reduced.
