As well as being immune to atmospheric conditions, L band gives a relatively high beam-width, so is suitable for terminal antennas that will not be pointed very accurately towards the satellite, e.g. handheld and portable terminals, and does not typically require reflectors (dishes).

2 C band

C band covers the frequency range from 4 to 8 GHz. It is widely used for fixed satellite services, such as television distribution, internet access, and telephony. C band offers more bandwidth than L band, which allows for higher data rates and better quality of service. However, C band is also more susceptible to atmospheric attenuation, especially at higher frequencies. Moreover, C band suffers from interference from microwave ovens, radars, and wireless networks, which operate in the same or adjacent frequency bands.

While C band at e.g. 6 GHz will suffer from rain fade, this will often be only up to a few dB and can be somewhat mitigated, unlike e.g. Ka band where a diversity site with different weather conditions might be required.

3 Ku band

Ku band spans the frequency range from 12 to 18 GHz. It is mainly used for direct broadcast satellite services, such as satellite TV and radio. Ku band provides more bandwidth than C band, which enables higher resolution and more channels. However, Ku band is also more affected by rain fade, which reduces the signal availability and reliability. Furthermore, Ku band requires smaller antennas than C band, which reduces the cost and complexity of the ground equipment, but also increases the beam divergence and the pointing error.

4 Ka band

Ka band covers the frequency range from 26.5 to 40 GHz. It is mostly used for broadband satellite services, such as high-speed internet and video conferencing. Ka band offers more bandwidth than Ku band, which allows for very high data rates and lower latency. On the feeder link, site diversity might be required, with the feed switching to the diversity site when the weather conditions are bad at the primary site. The two sites would need to be far enough apart for their weather conditions to be independent.

Also consideration should be given to penetration and reach in cities and the type of uses. Most of the time it's not just about reach in distance but also depth through concrete, subways etc. Additionally, consideration should be given to scalability due to growth in certain regions. Big cities vs sparse reaches. If used in communication between equipment (eg cars) then the utilization may vary on season, time of day, location (eg sports stadium)
