How can you check your communication biases?

We must recognize that we all have biases and having awareness is the first step. This awareness can help us question our own assumptions and stereotypes when communicating with others. Practice active listening by attentively considering what others say, avoiding quick judgments and striving to grasp their perspective before responding; empathy is essential here in trying to understand different viewpoints. Before responding in a conversation, take a moment to consider whether your response might be influenced by biases. Words matter, so choose your words carefully.

To identify communication biases, start by reflecting on your interactions. Notice if you tend to interrupt, stereotype, or dismiss others' opinions. Seek feedback from diverse sources, like friends and colleagues, to uncover blind spots. Keep a journal to record instances where biases may have influenced your communication. Additionally, engage in empathy exercises to better understand different perspectives. Finally, educate yourself about common biases such as confirmation bias and work consciously to mitigate them in your conversations.

By recognizing that we have communication biases, we take the first step towards continuous improvement, that is, we begin the learning process towards achieving better developed knowledge. Well-developed knowledge is essential for the decision-making process.

In my opinion, I get frustrated where others are so determined to pursue their own views or what the are comfortable or accustomed to what they have done in the past, that they then do not listen to the opinions of others. My frustration, then leads me to speak less, listen more to consider whether their view may be the best view . However, sometimes it looks to late to express ones own view though it would later be proven to be the better approach.Hence, in summary, listening is an art when frustrated, but more importantly, is making sure your own view point is still articulated, despite, situations where others are not listening.

Again a frustration when listening to views of others, it is important to establish, whether another opinion or view or change can be accepted, considered or used. If not, one needs to consider whether it is worth being there. I have also started to place some views onto AI chat boxes. I have been able to reconsider my thoughts or build upon my thoughts. I start from a point, i may not be right, but if i can establish a joint benefit to meet the desired outcomes, i have added value

Over time, i have learnt what not to do and what to do, when engaging with others. My biggest learn is to understand from people, their background and sometimes learn from closely aligned friends of others, what makes them tick. Peoples experiences influences, what they say, how they say it and what feedback is given. I recall a situation where I was sworn at. I was told to ..... off . But it was done in a nice tone and nice way. Only later i realised, the response was in that persons view a massive thank you for such a good idea. it is just that she used language that i did not use but to her she was accustomed using. Try not to assume too much. Better to ask. And sometimes better to ask in confidence and not public ally

Knowing, or better yet learning and using, the language of those with whom we interact is essential to improving positive communications within an organization. For example, it will come across somewhat challenging, if i asked a colleague what have they are spending their time on tomorrow, whereas if i said i need some help tomorrow, then ask, that brings context
