How can you captivate your audience from the first sentence of your speech?

One way to start could be to present a topical question related to your subject. That should make the audience to think. Then visualize in different ways if possible.

It's a two step process: 1. Get a brief understanding from the audience regarding the key areas they want to learn. 2. Frame the first sentence focussed on these areas, helps build a connection with the audience and keeps them engaged in the presentation.

When engaging with people, my goal is to create a engaging introduction that sets a positive tone which is a corner stone of stakeholder engagement. Adjusting the level of detail and tone based on the nature of the audience and the specific goals of the project (engagement effort).

I think that executive presence is just as important if not more important than the first thing you say. Before saying anything you must project confidence and be prepared to take control of the audience. First sentence should be a well prepared greeting and appreciation of an opportunity to speak in front of them. Even the strongest opening sentence can fall flat if presented with hesitation and/or lack of confidence.

I am reminded of the historic speech delivered by Swami Vivekananda on September 11, 1893, in Chicago at the Parliament of the World's Religions introducing Hinduism and Indian spirituality to the Western World. Vivekananda began his speech with the famous words, "Sisters and brothers of America," which captivated the audience and set the tone for his message of universal brotherhood and religious tolerance. This very first sentence got him a standing ovation and a thunderous applause that lasted for 2 minutes. The reason was simple. He immediately established the heart to heart connection with the 7000 people in the audience. This is what knowing your purpose is when you wish to captivate the audience from the very first sentence.

Whenever I deliver a speech, I usually start it with a question. Yes, a question. Something related to my topic, something that ignites conversation. Basically, I like to set a question in frame, which I plan on answering via my speech. This helps by developing my audience’s expectation- as to what topics they can expect an answer to. This establishes clarity.

- Start with a powerful quote, - A personal story, - A surprising statistic, or a bold statement that piques the audience’s curiosity. You should also use eye contact, gestures, vocal variety, and pauses to keep the audience engaged.

Having a clear purpose is important and a clear understanding of who your audience is and what they care about is a must. Once you are ready to start your speech use the power of storytelling; humans are naturally drawn to stories to make sense of the world we live in. Captivate your audience with a story that is vivid, relevant, and relatable. Transport your audience to the scene where your story is taking place by using vivid language. A compelling story can create a strong emotional connection with your audience members which will create a predisposition for them to engage with the rest of your speech.

Paining a picture with your words can serve as the best hook. Use of analogies and drawing parallels during your presentation will always help you deliver the message and captivate the audience.

Really simple, I start off my saying: "Show of hands if you've..." Phrasing this question will bring in an element of interaction and catch the audience's attention!

In a world where attention spans are dwindling by the day, I follow the "KISS" approach to presentations: "Keep It Short n Simple." Using language your audience understands is crucial. I've shifted to regional languages in forums to connect better. Clarity and conciseness mean being honest, delivering the essence without unnecessary jargon, ensuring your message resonates.

Beyond authenticity and confidence: True connection in speaking, what Zoe Chance calls 'shining,' is key in my role as University President. It's about creating a bond with each listener, making them feel uniquely seen and heard. This starts with authenticity and confidence, being fully present, and tuning into the audience's energy. I aim to make each speech a shared journey, not just delivering a message but building a bridge of empathy and understanding. Every word is an opportunity to engage deeply, turning speeches into powerful tools for inspiration and connection.

Infuse your opening sentence with confidence and authenticity to establish credibility and connect with your audience. Steer clear of weak or tentative language that may undermine your assurance or sound apologetic. Employ strong and assertive language to convey conviction and passion for your topic. Be genuine, using your unique voice and style that aligns with both your subject matter and audience. This authenticity not only enhances your connection with listeners but also sets the tone for a compelling and authoritative speech.

Achieving it on the first try is unlikely. Keep practicing and making corrections. Consider using a recorder to replay and evaluate your performance. Practice in the presence of experts and friends, seeking their opinions for necessary adjustments.

Before you craft your opening sentence, it helps to observe or know your audience. When you know who you are speaking to, grabbing their attention becomes easier. For some sets of audience, its humour that works best, for some its a thought provoking question, and for some its a well-known quote. There are people who respond best to compelling statistics. There is no one hook that works on all audience. Your audience is only always interested in what they would like to hear. If you do not know your audience, find the most disruptive aspect of the content you're about to deliver and start with that. It intrigues people. If you can make it interactive, you might draw insights that can help you shape the rest of your delivery as well!

Choose appropriate and meaningful body language during a presentation. Don’t hesitate to use humor where appropriate or if you feel you that the energy is going down. Be like a DJ and navigate your thoughts and ideas through your words and body language and always remember to keep the audience involved by promoting questions and participation.

You can begin the first sentence of your speech with "your introduction " and captivate the audience ! The audience will be interested in knowing the speaker better and a solid intro will set the stage for the speech !!!

Connect your story to their stories. Even if you're a world-class keynote speaker, you don't want to alienate yourself from your audience. Building a down-to-earth connection with the first sentence helps to make you intellectually approachable. I remember I had to address approximately a hundred people specializing in social services. My legs shook, and my throat was dry. I stood before them and said out loud: "I wish I were as good at public speaking as our friends asking for money near the community center. With a little bit of training, our friend here, John, could work at the local radio station." (John had problems with alcohol at the time, but he had a name, a face and opportunities to fight for). People were moved instantly!

Consider impactful speeches, like those on YouTube or historical addresses by leaders such as Martin Luther King and Winston Churchill. Analyze how they engage and resonate. Learn from accomplished speakers and orators, understanding their techniques. Whether it's the power of Martin Luther King's "I have a dream" or Winston Churchill's "We Shall Fight on the Beaches," these iconic speeches reveal the art of captivating an audience.
