For me (as a, primarily static/print, cartographer), I've found a simple website to be the best format for a map portfolio. It's easy to include a link on your CV (as there is rarely a place to include a PDF portfolio in most job applications), it's quick and easy to view (remember that recruiters/hiring managers often don't have much time to spend digging through supplement materials in applications), and it's simple to add to (it's most valuable if you keep it regularly updated). There are certainly other cool options like an ArcGIS Story Map or a web map but, if you choose that route, make sure to keep it simple and ensure that viewers can immediately see your best maps without a ton of scrolling/clicking interaction.

A web mapping portfolio may not engage people lacking a strong technical knowledge, such as recruiters, or anyone unfamiliar with mapping. In such case, your target audience will be technical employers, posing a significant challenge to ensure that your portfolio resonates appealing across multiple domains using web mapping, that’s mean you need to add as much as possible projects to align with many domains and keep them updated with the latest technology to effectively showcase your evolving skills! I believe it is better to have simple website with some of your appealing maps, so it matches all audience backgrounds, and if your goal is to communicate a specific narrative using maps, a StoryMap emerges as a more captivating.

For instance, a PDF portfolio is often underrated but can be highly effective, especially when sent along with a job application. However, if showcasing web development skills is your aim, platforms like WordPress or GitHub Pages may be more suitable. The choice between using template-based services like ArcGIS Online and customizing your own site depends on your specific goals. Therefore, defining your end goal is the crucial first step in choosing the right platform for your portfolio.

I agree with the other contributors, definitely understanding and thinking about the final product and how you want to present yourself is very important. I also found that having a simple website was the best format to present my map and work portfolio. Since I have a few different aspects of work samples, a simple website with different pages really helps divide and highlight the important pieces. Remember that you can easily embed StoryMaps and Dashboards into a simple website, so if you have content on ArcGIS online that you want to display it is very easy to add it!

Some folks have mentioned the storymap approach, and I agree that this can be effective, but there are a few things in my experience that you'll need to consider. For Esri Storymaps, it will be necessary to "share" any ArcGIS Pro projects to the arcgis.com portal, and then insert them into the Storymap. This means getting the permissions correct, not just in Storymaps but on the portal (eg don't set the shared map to "organization" and the storymap to "everyone"). Another cool option is to make your webmap into an instant app, which means it will live on its own webpage, which you can share with employers. Bear in mind, the design and look will change.
