One thing I've found useful in growing your VC network is to be more specific than just "venture capital". In my case, as an investor and fund manager in advanced technologies, I tend to relate the content I publish and the connections I make to deeptech. It's not always possible, but both data and LP appetite show that specialists within venture capital are having an edge today. Therefore finding your sector's niche matters. Something most people don't do, but that can be very powerful is connecting with both your target customer profile and the one just above in the "money chain". For instance: if you work with founders, building a network of VCs as well can help you be more helpful to your customers.

It requires going beyond the transactional approach and establishing meaningful connections. In order foster rapport and trust with your contacts, my recommendation is to focus on adding value without expecting immediate reciprocation. I receive tens of messages per day as VC (and I also write my fair share). One thing that DOESN'T get you through the door is anonymous blasts. Nor too many sensational adjectives. One or two critical bits of info and/or numbers and making the ask relevant to the other party instead does. For example: Wrong: "hi, I see you are an investor, I am raising money for an amazing startup that we will sell for billions, can I jump on a call?” Right: "Hi Mary, great to see you're passionate about deeptech. I'm an exited founder who's launched a robotics company and already closed 3 paid pilots. Interested in a pitch?”

Events are a wonderful way to build and deepen relationships. There is no substitute for IRL connections, yet it was easy to forget that when you can efficiently take 8 zoom calls in a given day. But your time would be better spent bringing 8 people to a small group gathering. I am an introvert, but pushed myself to start hosting events of different shapes and sizes. It has paid off greatly in the last 6 months, and I plan to double down on this ahead!

VC events can be fruitful but draining (physically and financially), especially when you have a small event/travel budget. My recommendation to fund managers I work with is to optimize for quality. Attend events that align with your thesis and fund strategy. If you're trying to break into VC or level up professionally, attend events that align with your career goals. Approach events with a quality over quantity mindset. Sure, SXSW is a major industry event, but is there density for potential co-investors, pipeline companies, and similar? Maybe not. Be strategic about using your time and resources when building your network. Also, when you meet folks, add them to your CRM and follow up to keep the relationship warm.

In my ten years as a VC investor, one thing I've continually seen success in doing to keep relationships warm and stay in touch is to email folks in my network articles or resources they may find useful. I also share upcoming events I'm hosting, attending, or spot in their area that they may find interesting. And when I introduce folks in my network to each other, I always get a double opt-in and log those introductions in my CRM. My CRM also tracks my network's interests, skills, needs, etc. This allows me to be more thoughtful and add value to my network. I am a big advocate for adopting a reciprocity attitude and giving without expecting anything in return. It all comes back in good karma, is my experience.

Introductions are powerful, but they should be genuine. Many times people ask for an intro after they tried to pitch and got rejected, or after a first exchange where no other value is generated. This is terrible. Introductions only make sense if you genuinely know the introducer and they can vouch for you. It pays off to invest in cultivating real relationships, as an intro is not just a bridge to a 3rd party, but a way to get validation for yourself.

To seek referrals and reach out to more investors for a list of 100 A-list prospects: 1. Utilize Your Network: Ask mentors, advisors, and industry peers for referrals. Personal introductions build trust. 2. Attend Networking Events. 3. Engage on Social Media: Use LinkedIn to connect with prospective investors. Share updates and engage with relevant content. 4. Reach Out Strategically: Tailor your outreach to each investor, showing why your business aligns with their interests. 5. Offer Value: Provide insights, event invites, or connections to show value beyond seeking investments. 6. Online Presence: Ensure your website and social profiles present your business positively. 7. Stay Persistent: Follow up consistently to nurture connections.

One great way to add value to others is sharing and connecting. By connecting people who can be of help to each other and by sharing your learnings and tools, you'll be able to pass your network and knowledge on. And people will respond positively to it.
