How can you build trust with donors who have specific areas of interest?

It's simple. Listen more! People will share everything you need to know if you give them an opportunity. Remember people are more than just a wallet. They are a partner in transformation. Value and respect your supporter and ensure they always have a fantastic experience every time they interact with you.

Building donor trust begins with understanding them and finding areas of synergy between your missions and vision and their shared interests and strategies. Armed with adequate information, proceed to organize ‘meet and talk’ sessions to sell what you do and why you believe you are the right fit to compliment the donor to achieve strategic interests and objectives. During the meetings, you can showcase your work including successes achieved, challenges faced, solutions implemented, best practices and innovative approaches, impact derived and value for money attained. Donors like to invest in organizations that help them attain their objectives and align with their work. Show them you fit the purpose.

In the world of nonprofit the donor is the customer; they are the ones “purchasing” your “product”. Your product is your organization’s core mission and so understanding the individual buying into that mission is paramount to your organization’s success. Look through their eyes, their lived experience and get to know the donor beyond just a dollar sign. Just like you, they too are human.

This is really the core work of fundraising, sponsorship solicitation, and grant writing. You have to know which program or area of work to pitch a prospective donor. I once heard that donors give to realize their dreams (not ours), and I carry that with me on every step of my prospecting process. Once you know what outcome a donor wants to achieve, you simply have to demonstrate how your cause makes that happen. Don't try to sway people who don't share your dream, rather find the folks who want the same thing as you do, and help them realize it.

Treating donors as partners involves sharing both successes and failures, with the overarching aim of fulfilling the intended goals.

Another step is to maintain transparency by being open about your objectives, methodologies, and how their contributions will be utilized within the specific area of interest. Offer detailed plans and progress reports to demonstrate accountability and the effective use of their donations.

One of the things I love about the NPO I work at we focus on transparency, integrity, resource and one person at a time. By giving back into the community bringing awareness to what you are doing gives the transparency.

Build accountability comes through building relationship, and there is no quick solution to building a relationship. It's about developing trust through being genuine.

When you care about your audience and pay attention, their problems will become evident. Problems are opportunity to make a change, to provide value and make a lasting impact. When you care, and act, you make a difference.

I personalize my interactions by acknowledging their contributions and the significance of their support in advancing the causes they care about deeply. Tailoring my communication to resonate with their values, demonstrating a genuine understanding and appreciation for their commitment.

If you've ever achieved something of value, you know it wasn't a lonely road. Things worth doing are done together, and accomplished in the same fashion. Give praise where praise is due.

One of the best ways to strengthen a relationship with a donor who has a specific interests is to keep them engaged and to make sure the donor is aware of other programs or opportunities that you offer relating to their interests. I have also learned that asking a donor if there is a need that is not being addressed in their field of interests and then brainstorm how your organization may be able to address it helps build trust and loyalty. By doing this your organization becomes donor focused and encourages the donor to invite other like minded individuals into the conversation increasing your organizations exposure, credibility, and donor base.

Prioritize relationships by engaging in meaningful conversations beyond just seeking donations. Show a genuine interest in their perspectives, involve them in discussions or decision-making processes related to their areas of interest, and seek their input on future initiatives. This fosters a deeper connection and a sense of partnership, further solidifying trust and support.

Improve communication and media performance. In some cases the only way donors know about us is through media performance. Text, photos, videos and graphics on our website need to be updated regularly, curated carefully while still making it interesting. Media coverage can reflect public opinion on the program and be a measuring tool for our track record. Our social media is increasingly important as a tool to measure public engagement.

Storytelling is always the best and being visual. Lots of people have podcast but one thing about our npo we are visual and you can see the person who telling the story. Each story is their personal story and we use it as a resource to help, educate or be a sharing and caring piece.
