How can you build a team culture that promotes collaboration and creativity?

Foster a Safe and Inclusive Environment. Creating a safe space where everyone feels comfortable sharing their ideas is crucial. Encourage open communication, active listening, and respect for diverse perspectives. Emphasize that everyone's input is valued and appreciated.

I’d add: Champion the expertise of your team members. Credit them for their ideas and their ability to grow others. Collectively, not just one superstar. In other words, encourage your emerging leaders. They are critical to your company’s future success, and they’ll learn through example how to build the future leaders who come behind them.

1. Start by removing the fear of 'failure'. Without failure there can be no innovation. 2. Create an atmosphere where ideas and input, from any level, are welcome. 3. Give constructive feedback on those contributions. Don't leave them in dark on why an idea may or may not work. 4. Give credit/recognition when that input/idea yields positive results. Some may be hesitant to share if they think others with get the accolades. 5. Offer regular opportunities for creative brainstorming or conversations. Don't just wait for once a year planning or specific project deadlines.

A few years ago at a conference the keynote speaker said, "Culture in a workplace should be your top priority above productivity and results." This really resonated with me because if your team are happy, feel appreciated and that they are contributing, then productivity and results will follow. At The Agency, our company culture is sacred. We work hard to make sure that the team have a work-life balance. What does this mean? We have flexibility, we work from home or go into the office, we take mental health days, we have rotating Friday's off, we celebrate wins and try to learn from losses. We support eachother. We call it our culture of adulting - and it works! Our team have respect and work together willing to deliver great results.

Creating an inclusive environment is crucial for fostering a team culture that thrives on collaboration and civility. In such a setting, every voice is not just heard, but actively encouraged, ensuring diverse viewpoints enrich discussions. This openness empowers everyone to speak freely, nurturing a sense of belonging and respect. When team members feel their opinions are valued, it sparks creativity and drives collective success.

The saying that “a good idea can come from anywhere” really speaks to the opportunity leaders have to embrace different viewpoints. And from your team’s perspective, this creates an environment where they can feel engaged, making meaningful contributions.

As a Black woman in tech PR, I know firsthand the power of diversity in building a successful team culture. Not only does it bring a range of perspectives and ideas, but it also enables better understanding and connection with target audiences. To truly harness the benefits of diversity, it's essential to recruit for diversity and create a safe space for open dialogue and feedback. But it's not just about ticking a box. Diversity should be celebrated and embraced at all levels, from leadership down. When diverse perspectives are valued and respected, it creates a sense of belonging and enables everyone to contribute their best ideas and work.

The diversity of the team is an advantage. A good manager should recognize it and use it to improve performance. A good manager should first train the members to be even better and then constantly work on their cooperation so that they "play" for the result.

It may involve investing in staff having quality face-to-face time, if that includes a lunch or a teambuilding course, these are worthwhile investments. Yes, some examples include allowing staff to play with new software apps. Giving them the rope to do it, and then supporting them in being able to introduce it to the organisation. I have personally as a manager done small things such as morning teas for my team. Remembering birthdays is very important. Celebrating personal achievements, and being able to have the psychological safety for all staff to feel they are able to share personal news and celebrations, such as children’s graduations, pets, news and achievements, that is all hallmark of a culture that people want to be part of.

Sometime you don't realize how much creativity and innovation can be triggered with the right amount of research and resources. One time I ask my team to subscribe to an industry journal and learn as much as they need about a certain project we were working on. The following week, they came up with all sorts of bright ideas they learn from other organizations that have tried to achieve exactly what we want.

From my experience, we need three main resources: empathy, being there to listen with an open mind and willingness to accept that things change and evolve.

Take time at the beginning of new projects to just brainstorm with the team - nothing is off limits. Make it a free space to think, collaborate. You will find the freedom, diverse perspectives and people iterating off each other makes for many new and creative solutions.

It’s also important to grow a culture of collaboration, respect and compassion. Acknowledging the work, ideas and thoughts that others put into a project is key to open communication. This in turn can encourage creativity and good teamwork- all leading to better results.

Diversity in the team is often chaotic, however the chaos enables successful brainstorming. Different options and skills brought together, provide outlooks that are holistic and have a wider implementation capability. Communicate and continued interactions are key to building a successful strategy / deal for long term progress.

My dad always says that 99% of issues are from miscommunication, unclear communication or lack of communication. While he means this for life, it’s true in the workplace as well. As communicators, we need to hold ourselves to an even higher standard in this regard. We can accomplish this by ensuring our communications to those on our team, as well as those outside our team, are crisp, clear and considers multiple variables and voices. Ultimately, this will lead to improved performance, collaboration and confidence, while also decreasing challenges and issues.

“Yes, AND…” never fails. If you lead by example and create a space where everyone feels safe contributing without their ideas immediately being shot down, you will always get better, more creative ideas out of your team.

Engendering trust amongst team members is key to having a "well oiled" team dynamic. There would undoubtedly be team members with more experience, skill or general knowledge about the industry.....this is a fortunate outcome of diversity. Despite these differences, each team member must see the strengths in their counterparts and understand how that strength balances their diminished strength in that particular area. Without trust, what results is usually a leader who micromanages and a team that flops around absent direction and joint purpose.

It is important to meet with team members who are willing to contribute with solutions. Caring leadership should consider diversity in ideas when working on complex issues.

Recognition is important, but it needs to be timely, relevant, and meaningful to the recipient. It has to be more than a generic ‘nice job’. I also believe it’s important to create an environment where people at all levels are encouraged to share what works — and what doesn’t. The open, honest exchange of ideas, successes, and failures facilitates trust, creates a shared sense of purpose, and provides a safe place where people can learn from each other and continue to grow.

Our team implemented a peer recognition program where each team member was given an annual budget to recognize or reward their peers. Gifts included coffee, gift cards, lunch, pizza deliveries and specific gifts that held meaning to the relationship. It's a wonderful way to build connection, and a culture of recognition and gratitude. (And how fun is it to receive a surprise card with a gift in the mail!?)

Recognizing and rewarding employees is very important and is one of the critical factors that boost team morale. I think reward and recognition when implemented very well has an opportunity to also retain top talent in the company.

Trabajar juntos es el éxito.”

Authentic leadership is impossible to achieve without first demonstrating to your team the values, principles, and standards by which you expect them to operate. Your words and actions enhance or undermine the culture you are trying to create -- act intentionally to build something amazing. And remember, strive for excellence, not perfection. Said another way, strive for attainable greatness, not guaranteed failure. The same grace that you need to extend to yourself when you fall short of your own expectations is the same grace you should provide to others. However, take the opportunity to gain knowledge and insights from those mistakes.

To be honest, the best way to to build a trusted team is to model the way. Creativity thrives where there is collaboration from top to bottom. I believe ideas are enriched when we contribute to them and not just leave it to certain members of the team. In my career, I have experienced success when I was able to inspire everyone to pull towards the same goal. Model the way and see your team thrive.

As a leader, you set the pace, you set the standards from arrival time to how your team supports each other, especially in times of crisis. You then need to identify allies who have bought into your leadership and use their influence to spread your leadership style to other members instead of it always being you. Create a culture, in the early stages create it with the earlier adopters.

To build a creative culture, you need to be willing to allow the failure and mistakes that come with creativity and innovation. You also need to accommodate a culture of healthy questioning and embracing saying NO!

Modeling also means asking for feedback, being open to receiving other opinions, and creating an open door policy. When everyone feels they have a level of accountability, they will work towards a common goal rather than feel siloed in their individual roles. If you’re in marketing and want to collaborate, that means being open to feedback from all types of team members in order to help grow the business, as well as feeling comfortable giving feedback to others.

Curiosity can be a great compass if you listen to perspectives from all levels and roles in a company. Fearless listening and being open to ideas generates collaboration and creativity. Some people can brainstorm on the spot and others need time to process ideas so play to individual strengths and develop room for different types of contributors to thrive.

Let people shine. I would add this as a critical component of creating a solid collaborative team culture. While it is important to recognize people, a good way to do that is to know the strengths of team members and give them a chance to opine or participate in team efforts from their strength. This facilitates a sense of belonging and acceptance along with recognition. This also bolsters feelings of safety because if the team and the leader of that team recognizes and calls on a team member to exercise their expertise, that person will feel they have value and a future with the team. All critical sentiments for team members to participate with openness, full creativity, and with dynamism.

Set goals. The goals and objectives should be the same, analyzed for mutual dependency and adjusted as needed to avoid punishing one for the miss of another. Thank. Instead of thanking one person for a new deal - thank everyone who supported. Compensate. Avoid conflicts of compensation: all involved should benefit. Pair. A task force or a project- put two people from different teams in charge. Forced to achieve the same goals they start understanding each other’s issues better and partner in a true sense.

Another important thing we can do is give our teams time, permission and a structure within which to be creative. One approach is allocating designated time, like monthly "innovation days." This structured time on a Friday afternoon invites teams to share prompts they had researched — from unique furniture designs to rival ad campaigns — to foster creative thinking. All ideas are welcome, and the key is novelty to ignite creative juices. Leading up to the day, small groups collaborate on research, and during the sessions, everyone has a chance to learn and build upon these insights, linking them to our daily work. This intentional framework can provide space and permission for teams to explore and share ideas outside the usual scope.

Hire wisely so creativity and collaboration is foundational. Start with defining what those two words mean within the framework of your team’s working relationship and, when hiring, make sure you thoughtfully screen for people who align with bringing those values every single day. Then just trust your team. If you’ve hired well, the team will fill in the gaps when collaboration isn’t working or creativity breaks down. If not, re-assess and re-assign projects to foster creativity and collaboration that delivers on the core team values.
