Everyone needs a support system, be it a team member or a manager or even the CEO. Everyone is unique in their own way, has unique skillset. Being aware of your team members requirements is one of the most important task of the manager. A regular 1:1 connect with the team members is a great way to understand their requirements and together work towards it.

Situations : help them build a network with reliable coaches and mentors If the need is identified, the network development and fulfilment will be effective.

One of the best internal resources for creating a support network is building relationships with internal colleagues. Introduce your team to cross-functional partners and empower your team to reach out to those colleagues. As an individual contributor, reach out to your internal colleagues and ask for 15 minutes on their calendar to introduce yourself and get to know them and their role better. Discuss expectations and how you can best work together and support each other. Taking the time to reach out to someone when you don’t need anything from them makes it much more likely they will be willing to speak to you and provide support if and when you do need something.

This strategy centres on utilising existing organisational resources to bolster team performance and well-being. There are a ton of trainings out there, but most of them don't make sense. The team member and the manager need to connect and decide the best way ahead, taking into consideration the KPI's and companies objectives. This could include trainings, hands-on projects, exposure to work in cross-functional teams etc.

Making the switch from in-person to remote work highlighted the need for and the importance of social connectedness. One of the best internal resources that have helped me develop a support network are active Employee Resource Groups — specifically participating in conversations and events, and if you want to take it further, encourage participation as one of the committee leads of those groups. As a lead, you naturally have higher stake in the community and you want events to feel meaningful and be well received; with this motivation, new relationships are formed on projects that are inherently more personal so it contributes to building a community which in the end is the best form of a support network.

In our team's work with startups, it helps to develop a strong external network. When you are on a charter to support cutting-edge applications, you are always looking to spot interesting startups. An external network helps identify these much better than by doing it all by yourself. These friends, as you should refer to them, help connect your problems to possible solutions. They may have solved that in a different way or worked with a startup. That experience sharing is super valuable. Like any network, you need to work on it. Attend events, know what others are doing, and be of help to them. Do these earnestly and over time, your network will be a strong ally. Best of luck!

In my experience this is one of the crucial areas often overlooked when talking about building a support network for your team. Perhaps it's because it potentially requires resources (time off or budget allocation). It's also a strategic priority (important but not urgent), and we know that in our dynamic environment Leaders often end up fire fighting rather than focusing on strategic priorities. At the end of the day the benefits of expanding the external network of your team beyond your own organization could be priceless in my opinion. Stepping out of your office environment, be it in person, or virtually, is like a breath of fresh air. Suddenly things fall in perspective, and new connections, insights, and experience can be gained.

Cross team collaboration on trainings, hands-on projects, non-work initiatives etc. are few examples where the team member can be given exposure and visibility to a larger audience. Care must be taken that while doing this the team KPI's and objectives are still being met.

One thing I've found helpful in expanding my network beyond the organization are 1) industry events and 2) an organizational culture which financially supports attendance to events AND encourages rich learning and application of those learnings. These events can be remote, all-day, in-person, or one-hour. Whatever the flavour is, it should feel accessible for employees financially and leaders can help make sure this happens by creating a culture of continuous learning: attending them yourself, sharing back your learnings, and reminding folks to seek events that interest them. Through industry events, it's inevitable employees meet like-minded folks and likely will be exposed to new ways of thinking, and expand their network meaningfully!

Something I've helped teams with is bring back LIFE into meetings by introducing get-to-know your teammates activities. I work remotely and sometimes meetings can feel purely transactional. This isn't all bad: we have to get things done! BUT, when I don't feel like I know my teammates and understand how everyone's feeling, I start to feel disconnected and I know others start to feel this way too. Break the disconnect with this: ?? One of my previous managers told me one thing, when I became a manager for the first time. He said 'remember; here on, if you want to grow in the organisation, make sure you focus more on your teams' members growth than your own'. If your team grows, you will automatically grow'. When you and your team member decide on a certain path, make sure to support him/her all the way, motivate as needed, appreciate when there's success, and provide constructive feedback when there's a mistake.

In the game of ice hockey, we never pass the puck backward, which is the secret model of our gold-medal winning performance. Supporting behavior has the same effect on team performance. There's also the organizational culture phenomenon, which could be layered with tools, techniques, and practices that elevate the performance of members. It's akin to developing leaders at all levels of the organization, who are on auto-mode in nurturing progress. The subconscious is a powerful enabler of performance; so it's super-helpful to model the organizational culture.

In my experience, building external support network for the team is a long-term process that requires proactivity, consistency, and genuineness. You also need to be respectful, courteous, and professional. Start by thinking about others you could help and benefit from your knowledge and expertise. Your network will reciprocate.

Understanding the support which team requires can be analysed by feedback questionnaire, meeting them on an informal note , event gatherings and during a casual conversation. This will give us the insights on the network support they need at workplace. Emotional support network helps them in connecting with their mentors/ leads/ organisational counsellors or psychologist who help them in taking care of their mental health . Technical support network connects them with their superiors or experts to help them enhance their careers and growth . Thought sharing support network helps in connecting with like minded colleagues. social support network helps them to be up to date about market and keeps them up confident among others.

Make learning a habit. It can be done through various ways, having external experts come for a talk, workshops or subject matter experts can engage in knowledge-sharing sessions. If nothing, identify experts in the industry through YouTube and other online resources. When learning becomes a habit, and your teams know that seeking knowledge is part of your core culture.. it enables people to come forward with doubts, etc. This is a support system where you ensure you are giving the time, space and tools for one to grow.
