How can you build a successful practice as a new life coach?

"You must niche" is a cliche. Maybe it works for some but it's certainly not a universal truth. I don't buy into it. I currently have clients who are: -> Business owners (from many different industries that I don't understand) -> Senior managers ie employed not a business owner. -> Retirees with very different backgrounds. -> A sports professional. Not knowing anything about them or their life is a superpower, not a limitation. It means that in order to learn more about their life I have to ask all of the obvious questions. You know the ones. The ones that are so obvious they never thought to ask themselves. That gets them thinking about their life from a different perspective. Its one of the many benefits of life coaching.

Before embarking on your journey as a life coach, it's crucial to pinpoint your target market and define your unique value proposition. Delve into understanding the specific problems, goals, and needs of your ideal clients. Ask yourself how you can assist them in realizing their desired outcomes. Differentiate yourself by identifying what sets you apart from other life coaches in your field. Factors like your experience, credentials, perceived value, expenses, and market conditions all play a role. Additionally, defining the structure of your services is crucial—decide whether to offer hourly sessions, monthly packages, group coaching, or online courses. This thoughtful consideration ensures not only fair compensation for your expertise but also positions you attractively in the market, fostering client engagement and satisfaction.

To set one's rate, it is important that one look at his area of strength, ability, education, and years of experience. A life coach who is just starting should not charge the same amount of money as experienced life coaches. It is also important to have a rate that is competitive, inclusive, and progressive. One can explore hourly rates, monthly rates, or yearly rates. A life coach must be flexible so that he can create bespoke services for a diverse client base. And be able to meet the demands of his clients. Some clients need special services.

Although you maybe a new coach remember you come with years of experience and expertise especially if you have a niche that you have personal experience of working in. One who is not online is not alive. Our online presence is our interface with the rest of the world. A life coach must spend time and resources to increase his online presence. This is because the better one's online presence is, the more likely one will be able to attract clients, get booked for events, make sales of books, and earn more money.

It can feel overwhelming so remember you only need to go where your client goes so not all platforms are equal. As a starting point identify the top three platforms and build out from there, remember it takes time and it’s better to do several things well than many things done average or below. If you can’t afford to get help at this stage find people you can follow and connect with. Then do some master classes. Long term having a budget and investing in this area of your business will pay off, but until then do an ideal client customer persona and build your online presence around this.

Yes, we need to be available and have some content or videos online to share. But as a former product owner and current coach...I'd offer this; keep it simple. A google document can serve as a website. An ethos can be captured in a simple webpage. Some of the most successful coaches I've had the chance to work with didn't have a robust website. Build your online presence, but do not let it detract you from having more conversations and practicing your coaching skills daily/weekly.

To expand your life coaching practice, networking and collaboration play crucial roles. Attend events and workshops to showcase your expertise, learn from peers, and widen your network. It takes collaboration with other coaches for one to be able to work on a bigger project adequately. There are so many benefits to achieve from collaborating with other coaches. One can gain more visibility, an increased income, and an increase in authority status by collaborating with other coaches.

Attend industry events, both online and offline, to network with other professionals and potential clients. Collaborate with other coaches or professionals in related fields. Partnerships can lead to referrals and broaden your reach.

Asking for feedback and testimonials from clients is a great way to build your credibility and authenticity as a coach. Everyone reads these testimonials and makes a decision based on these along with other factors. Testimonials build faith and trust and let potential clients know that since you have helped people with certain or similar issues in the past ,you'll be able to help them as well.

Social proof is the most powerful tool you could use. What you have seeded, you'll get back after. Show how important it is for you to receive honest feedback.

Feedback and testimonials, helps to create credibility for a life coach. To build authority, and credibility, one has to leverage testimonials. Feedback helps one to improve one's service. One can also introduce different ways of giving feedbacks to make it easy to for the clients to give the coach feedbacks as quickly as possible.

There is a big debate around whether formal feedback in terms of surveys etc helps or not to your coaching. I find engaging with feedback throughout the coaching journey is much more valuable to both sides. Giving the client permission to give feedback on how it’s going what they would like more of, if they found something a challenge or wanted to challenge you as a coach. When clients start to feel confident in this area then it shows growth and is part of the equal relationship of coaching. Testimonials are different I believe they do add real value and help you build confidence in your coaching, so if things have gone well then ask for a testimonial and also referrals.

Request feedback from clients to continually improve your coaching skills. Positive testimonials can be powerful marketing tools. Encourage satisfied clients to share their experiences on your website, social media, or other platforms.

Read the book The Prosperous Coach by Rich Litvin and Steve Chandler. Apply what you learn in there. Read it again, apply the bits that you missed the first time. Read it again until you have a successful practice. It is the best advice you will ever get. A business coach is a good plan too. Most coaches don't really have a business head so need to learn the basics. It's not hard but a coach will save you a lot of time. As for creating clients though, the above book will teach you all you need. Everything else is fluff and a diversion.

I think it’s important to remember coaching has two sides, coaching and the business side. If you want to build a sustainable long term income then you need to put time into both areas. Remember any business takes time and effort so alongside CPD development for your skills then having a business plan and growth strategy are equally important especially if you are a self employed coach. Many coaches fail to generate enough income to sustain their financial requirements so looking at ways that you can generate income and what you need to do to achieve this is critical and far better than just leaving things to chance.

Enjoy every minute of the process.

Building a successful coaching practice requires a genuine passion for empowering others besides strategic planning and targeted execution. While all aspects covered above are important, investing in yourself is most critical in my view. Of course, quality training, coaching certifications, and ongoing professional development are critical. Mastering active listening and powerful questioning techniques are skills to effectively support and guide your clients. But, staying true to your values tops the list. Self awareness, overcoming one's conscious and unconscious biases, mental models, beliefs & stereotypes is where the work starts. Start by working with a mentor coach. Sharpen your axe before stepping out to cutting wood!
