How can you build a successful online coaching community?

I have been building a community of experienced corporate professionals, Career Champions Club. I started the community with a clear niche in mind. Professionals face multiple problems in their careers. The specific problem I can help them with is finding the next job fast. Because of this clear niche and purpose, I could attract faster adoption. The clients pay the coach not for the knowledge but for the result, the coach can help them produce. So instead of having a generic niche of career coaching, I started with a specific micro-niche of job search coaching and I could produce results. Now, as my community has grown beyond 500 members, I am expanding the niche to related areas like salary growth, building a second career etc.

Online coaching success hinges on a clear niche and purpose. Define your coaching focus, target audience, and community values to attract and retain the right members. In my experience with Digital Skills coaching, specificity delivers tangible results. A focused purpose and niche are the keys to initiation and sustained growth.

To really succeed you need to be able to choose the right platform, you need to have a concept of what's interesting to share and know who your audience is. For example, the LinkedIn app - LinkedIn is where professionals congregate. You can create groups, chat about current trends or just network.

The purpose of my niche is to provide coaching and mentorship to unemployed professional youth in Ethiopia. This is particularly important as over 1 million youth graduate from higher education institutions and prepare to enter the workforce each year. Additionally, a million youth join the labor market annually, making it crucial to focus on coaching and mentoring for this demographic. The goal is to support these young professionals in finding employment quickly and effectively. As my coaching community has grown to over 500 members, I am expanding the niche to address related areas such as salary growth and building a second career.

When choosing your platform you need to be mindful of accessibility and inclusion issues. Not all platforms are equally accessible. It is important to take into consideration issues of data usage, font size and general layout, the potential for automatic translation, among others. A thoughtful and thorough process of reflection on the use of the platform is key for success.

Welcoming is everything. Make people feel wanted - As they are! Invite them to share their experiences and clearly outline what’s available and outline the simple steps to access it!

I would add gated curated content as an additional strategy, which could be promoted at both search engines and social media to drive new members to the community.

Highlight the practical benefits, and a supportive community tailored to their specific needs. Deliver valuable content that address their challenges directly, making your community a go-to resource in their lives!

I have a rule to always respond to every DM and comment made through my post. As humans, we crave connection and interaction. The passion for coaching should first stem from building a connection and helping your connections rise through their aspirations. Engagement and responding through DMs and comments, is also a sign of respect. It's saying 'hey, I value your time for showing up and writing to me' .... Not nurturing those engagement is a huge missed opportunity.

All successful online communities have one thing in common - there are active members in these communities who come together regularly and talk about/ do interesting stuff together. Good communities have good engagement. Before zeroing in on the engagement approach, invite ideas from the members, look at your community’s purpose and mission & then design an engagement plan: 1. Use a variety of methods and formats 2. Decide on a frequency 3. Involve everyone. Don’t just keep involving the same people over and over 4. Think of what value you are creating with these engagement activities 5. Build a safe and positive environment

As far as the content goes, be VERY specific (i.e. narrow) for each piece of content and make sure it is easily digestible. It should capture their attention in the first 5-10 seconds, and not take more than 2-5 minutes to watch or read. If your content is more complex, then use these quick engagements as teasers/funnels for the full length versions. Depending on what it is, breaking into multiple parts (each providing unique value) can also work.

To keep the community engaged and hungry for more, consider fostering an interactive environment. Encourage discussions on relevant topics and create spaces for members to share their experiences and insights. Implement a regular schedule for content delivery, ensuring consistency in providing valuable information. Consider exclusive events or Q&A sessions with renowned experts, adding an element of exclusivity. By consistently delivering high-value content and fostering a dynamic, interactive space, you'll ensure that your coaching community remains an indispensable resource for your members.

I believe it is very important to give facetime to your community. Be it live online events, catch up conversations on zoom, the members of the community will only be engaged meaningfully if they see each other often, feel they are heard and also get learning opportunities from peers and masters alike. The online community must be a platform for both learning and networking with deep bonds of friendship and camaraderie among the members.

Online coaching has emerged as a powerful means to connect with individuals globally. The digital landscape allows coaches to transcend geographical boundaries, reaching people far and wide. As your community grows, it is essential to remain current with new trends. Treat your online community like an agile project, seek frequent feedback, and continuously improve your platform. Use surveys or polls to understand community members' needs, preferences, and areas for improvement. Adapting to the needs of your members ensures a thriving and supportive virtual space.

As I started to work with Triad, I noticed that the group had limited presence on LinkedIn. I suggested that the group consider raising its professional visibility. A well-maintained LinkedIn presence builds credibility. It serves as a professional portfolio, showcasing your group's expertise, achievements, and testimonials, thereby establishing trust with potential clients. LinkedIn is a hub for professional networking. It allows your group to connect with other coaches, professionals, and organizations in the coaching industry, fostering collaborations and partnerships. LinkedIn Groups facilitate discussions and engagement within your coaching community. It creates a space for members to interact and stay updated on industry trends.

A successful coaching community example I have seen in Pakistan is a community of all types of coaches and niches. They work together and holistically. They identify the needs of clients and the most relevant or specialist of that particular area coach the client in that particular area. So in this case, whether a client needs a fitness coach, mindset coach, diet coach, etiquette coach, hypnotherapist or mind programmer the team is ready to fulfill his/her need. So I strongly recommend all coaches to work in teams for better prospects.

Monitoring your community is important. Appropriate data helps you to support your clients and what it is that they seek to achieve. I reiterate that establishing targets for the sake of bragging rights and sharing how much money one can make, is not an authentic approach to coaching.

If the existing members feel the benefits, they will be more than willing to "market" the community through word-of-mouth marketing. In that way, the community will reach more people who seek the same impact. Nurturing those relationships with members is the key to grow the community further.

Stay authentic and true to your beliefs. You can adapt and grow, similar to your clients, but don't compromise who you are or feel the need to change the type of coach you want to be. It's ok to realize you aren't the right fit for every client or situation and when the right ones do come along, you will provide even greater support and guidance.

Collaboration works miracles for me. Please don't look at other coaches as competitors. When we have a clear vision of bringing awareness to this world and come from this energy, we attract the right people who are willing and ready to work for their dreams.

There must be equal efforts from both direction to get better end result. Regular progress check and improvement reported, works as a motivation factor for both parties. No matter what platform you choose, if one is loosing interest, it inversely hits targeted results.

Building a thriving community is also very personal and completely depends on your core values and intention. Ofcourse all of the above matters, but a community works in harmony when there is connection and alignment with the core values, mission and intention. Setting the tone brings in a holistic mindset and that becomes a strong foundation to grow and become successful.

Be authentic, original and true to both yourself and your community. Make sure that you are well informed and grounded on the area you have chosen. Don't stop there, pursue higher knowledge because the world is not stagnant. Evolve as the a new day unfolds. Be intentional about your approach, every step of the way.
