How can you build a successful career in marine renewable energy engineering?

To my knowledge there is no profession of a marine renewable energy engineer. We have a lot of different engineers working in the marine renewable industry. Building of tools like offshore windfarms is a very complex mix of techniques. First step is finding an investor e.g. a windfarm developer, looking for the different partners to build a windfarm, investigation for suitable areas based on local situation (permission to build a windfarm), wind, current, geology etc. and last step is to erect the windturbines and if needed a transformation platform, laying the cables to transport the power to the transformator and to shore.

Education is very important to set a base for further development of yourself in proffesional way but with confidence in personal and professional life the indivudal will strive to further educate himself and learn in general. Also keep in mind to listen and learn from as many sources possible. Success is not achieved by simple formula there is a lot of variables involved.

A marine renewable energy engineer will definitely require a strong background and a formal education in data analytics. The proficiency in tools like Tableau, R, power Bi etc. is required to ensure big data can be visualised and insights to be drawn.

I'm not sure marine engineering is relevant to renewable energy. Saying about the renewable energy propelled or consuming ships and off-shore platforms it's somewhat related that we can say a career of marine renewable energy engineering. But if we are talking about the renewable energy obtained from sea, oceans, tides etc. this not a field of marine engineer. With this point of view it only needs to be a renewable energy engineer which combines the disciplines of physics, hydrodynamics, mechanics, solar and design factors.

Been through a marine renewable energy project and in my experience, one needs knowledge and skills from diversified disciplines, such as marine engineering, naval architecture, mechanical/electrical engineer and even HSSE and risk management. However, one would not be able to attain mastery in all but it would be prudent to be skilled in one or few disciplines and having the appropriate level to define and manage a marine renewable energy project or operation. Sufficient on the ground experience is required to understand the challenges one faced in operating such systems including the human element and risks involved. Training for current crew is crucial to benefit them to adapt to such technology that may be novel to them.

Well in my life I learm one thing that in the world there are manny experts but all of them are experts in one particular area for a Marine engineer the field of expertise is the neverending road. Still as the more and more we are putting controls and monitoring into hands of technology I would say that skills in electro mechanics and AV/IT are slightly pushing pure mechanic a side. Components are nowdays cheaper and more easy to replace than to try and fix.

post-graduate programmes in renewable Energies and having international Standards such as STCW or OPITO is seems to be necessary,relevent people attending this programmes(such as Marine or offshore Engineers,Project Managers,...) Also redirecting knowledge for researching and improving innovations & to intrest young Generation to study in this subject also might be on educational institutions combining new IT techs Such as AI & ML from initial steps of commissioning also would be benefical and will improve the effectiveness attracting investments and a universal need of a cleaner environment also is a key to it

Important key is family. Is quite difficult to share your life with a partner leaving home in a 3-3 rotation i.e., altering your routines, social life, share tasks at home, and finally, plan holidays in family in a rotational scheddule that may be altered any time. Many of us decide to have a year or two off to make the above working somehow. Solution may be to be planned in advance by companies in such way that after 3 years in service (i.e) the seaman will have a 2 rotations at home so, in addition to the earned leaves, may get around 9 to 12 months at home. This time can be used for family, studying, etc.
