The first step towards building a robust relationship with your suppliers is to genuinely understand their business model, challenges and goals. This means going beyond the surface-level transactions and diving deep into what drives their businesses, their operational constraints and what they value in business relationships. By empathizing with their situation, you can tailor your interactions and expectations to fit both partner capabilities and constraints leading to a more productive partnership.

Like any relationship this is 2 way. 1. Remember without trust you have nothing. You have earn trust by demonstrating behaviours which show them they can trust you - transparent communication, doing what you said you would do and acting with integrity. 2. It's not about you, it's about them. Focus on them and understand the world from their perspective. What is it like for them on their side of table? Be a great listener - first seek to understand then be understood. 3. Show up and add value. Any fool can show up and try to sell something, but when you are able to help your customers solve problems even when there is nothing in it for you that is powerful. No one likes problems and someone who can solve problems for you is invaluable.

One shouldn't make the mistake of viewing vendor relationship through the narrow prism of commercials and transactionals. Once shortlisted, we must own them up, have continuous interaction, understand their bottlenecks(often attributable to our reluctance to share information). At the end of the day, they are our partners in running and developing our businesses.

Looking ftom the other side… In my experience as a supplier, the key is to have a transparent and constant communication. When we have a customer that opens their heart, it brings a lot of improvement in short term, different when we need to find out what’s not working and we don’t have a clue. At the same time, showing our client’s flaws helps them improve operational and product issues. For example, we use a weekly meeting with all our CX and CS team to understand the critical clients and we do the same thing directly with our top 50 clients. With this, we have a complete view of how we are doing and how they see our work. We score differently for both views and when they have discrepancies, we go to the source. That’s key!

I can't express enough how critical this point is, and it is pretty simple. Satisfy your customers first. Make them happy. Increase sales, increase the need for supplies, then you satisfy your suppliers and probably can get better deals. Don't satisfy your customers, sales go down, relationship with supplier goes down. The Win-Win opportunity starts with your customers. And possibly, with the help of your suppliers, you can deliver stronger together.

For me suppliers or as I like to call them "partners". play a major role in any successful stories that I had. and at the same time in any not-so-much successful story. So the skill of choosing the right suppliers/partners is crucial for a successful career.

You need to treat them with the same respect you treat your customers with. Be the customer they want to deal with, not the customer they hate answering the phone to. We're all customers and suppliers to someone.

Having clear goals, regular check-ins and SLA’s will help but being able to lean on each other or pull in a favor because you've built a strong relationship will go a long way with any partner internal or external.
