How can you build strong relationships with managers and executives?

This is the foundation to success. Once you have an understanding of goals & challenges, determine how you can support those objectives. Demonstrate through action how you can help.

In my experience, effective communication is a key aspect to any strong relationship. Audience- IT professionals often forget that when talking to people outside of IT, especially executives, that they need to talk in basic English/non tech jargon. Effectiveness- Get to the point. Communicate goals, set expectations, cover your bases on what's being communicated. Ask for feedback- Feedback helps you grow.

Understand them as people. Not just as titles and pictures on a badge. They have the same daily challenges, needs, and wants that we all have. Until you can relate to someone as a person, you will only have a superficial relationship.

To build strong relationships with managers & executives, it's essential to maintain open communication, seek feedback, be proactive, collaborate effectively, build trust, show interest in their professional development, and adapt to their communication style. A key point is to communicate in their language. You must understand their perspective, what is important to them, then communicate based on this understanding. Talking to someone in finance about external customer satisfaction is interesting, but not as relevant to them as talking about the month end close process, return on investment, etc.

Clear communication is key. One thing that I have found that helps is to ensure that key points are tied to business objectives.

There is no Rosetta Stone to convert the language of your specialization to that of managers and executives. Like it or not, learn a new 'language'. That language is one of business objectives, impacts and outcomes. Learn how to do it with concision. As a former boss would say: "be brief and begone"

Have weekly calls with the Manager concerned and effectively inform him about the dependencies involved about different teams and the support required from other teams to effectively deliver the task within the service level agreements defined.

Be prepared and organised, utilise a clear approach to writing, practice active listening, be careful of deadlines, seek feedback on your communication abilities, and create rapport and trust. Adapt your communication manner to their tastes, gather the relevant information, and structure your message with bullet points or headings & Get feedback on your communication abilities on a regular basis, and concentrate on strengthening areas of weakness. Developing strong relationships necessitates real attention, help, and a positive mindset.

Make sure that you and your managers and executives are using the same shared set of definitions as well as expectations. What 'incident' means to you may be different than what it means to a Risk manager.

This is essential. Additionally, problems never age well so early identification and notification of issues is important. Be clear about what will be achieved by what timeline.

Building strong relationships takes time & effort, but consistently demonstrating value, reliability, & commitment to the organisation's success will increase the likelihood of delivering on promises.

This is the part that many people don't pursue. It's great to take on additional tasks and provide transparency to your management team, but if you are not asking for feedback you are working blindly. Imagine putting up a year of hard effort only to find out at your annual review that you've been rowing in the wrong direction? Continuous feedback is what you want. Most managers, including myself, relish the opportunity to work with staff that is open to continuous improvement.

Feedback remains the major compass that guides a willing leaner. Without feedback, it is like walking in the dark. While one needs to be ready to do the real work, asking for feedback helps you to focus on the the major issues not spending important time or less valuable areas.

Seek advice from seasoned professionals, take advantage of training programs, and take the initiative to find areas for improvement. Praise upward does not need to be 'apple polishing'. I've found that the best way to phrase a compliment to a manager or executive is in the form of how they contributed to shared goals.
