Understanding our new role is fundamental for success in any position. We must begin by seeking clarity from our reporting manager who is the best guide in this scenario. We must ask for detailed explanations of the responsibilities of the new role & his expectations. Next, we should review any relevant documentation, such as JDs or past project plans. Next, identify key stakeholders, both within & outside your team, and understand how our role interacts with theirs. Additionally, we must collaborate with our manager to set clear goals & priorities aligned with team objectives. Hence, by thoroughly understanding our new role, & how it interacts with that of others helps us build strong relationships with our colleagues in the new role.

Transitioning to a new role is like joining a new club – you want to make friends and have a blast while you're at it! Start by organizing a "meet-and-greet" session where you can introduce yourself with a fun fact or a quirky talent (like juggling or beatboxing). I will argue that recognition and appreciation of colleagues in fact to everyone is by far very important. My shared experiences on this topic is that one needs to continuously appreciate and recognise colleagues and friends even though most of the time they are merely doing their job. By doing so you are saying that you can see them and you’re not taking for granted their daily contributions. Appreciation and recognition does not only strengthen collaboration but also builds trust in the work place. When recognition and appreciation is part of the daily work experience people trust more and productivity increases. Helping colleagues during transition is important to create a good morale and a culture where teamwork is appreciated.

When transitioning to a new role, you will always need allies and support of colleagues. Asking them for help politely and acknowledgement of how they support you will go a long way and building great professional camaraderie. When transitioning to a new role, an "I know it all" attitude may not work. At the same time you need to balance not coming across as someone who is only surviving on support mechanism. Therefore it is always good to identify all areas where you may need more clarity and then block a time to discuss all the issues for inputs from other colleagues. When I transitioned to my supervisor role on the exact same floor where I was an agent I made sure that everyone understood that my only difference was my title. Some asked was it a conflict of interest and we advised as long as everyone had the same treatment from me then everything would be fine. There was a time where i had to really stretch that I was a Supervisor first and friend second so sometimes they probably wouldn’t like me because we each had jobs to still be fulfilled. At any time I offered personalized help where I went to their desks and helped them 1 on 1 and sometimes it was at my desk so I could still be available for others. My direct team enjoyed coming to work knowing that they had a leadership team that supported them

The one who offers to shake hand first or takes the opportunity to introduce themselves exude confidence to strike the conversation. Develop those traits where you can take charge to break ice with colleagues who are interacting with you in your new role. Showing up for events and team initiatives is a great way to showcase your confidence and often paves way for breaking the ice. If you feel a discussion on work-related aspects could be awkward, pick neutral topics like sports, movies, city, etc. to start the conversion. Interact with diverse set of people rather than getting restricted to a small group or members of your immediate team.

Remember, work doesn't have to be all serious business – injecting some fun and laughter into the mix makes for a happier and more productive team!

Just wanted to add a small perspective to this which is when you enter a new surrounding the quickest way to become familiar about the new surroundings is only through the people, so if you will be receptive enough to handle a new perspective you would grow fast. Remember you can't grow alone, when the team grows you grow.
