How can you build a strong relationship with your boss to increase your chances of getting promoted?

Based on my experience as a manager, I would want myself to be like the top performer in my team. Connect on a regular basis to be in sync with your manager, ensure you are on top of things and avoid reminders. Good positive attitude and open to take up additional responsibilities goes a long way...

Understand that your job (no matter what the details or responsibilites of the individual role), is to make your bosses life easier. Once you focus on that, the rest falls in to place quite easily.

Building a strong relationship with your boss is an important factor in being promoted. Some ways to build this relationship include: - Showing respect and appreciation for your boss. - Being open to feedback and taking constructive criticism well. - Demonstrating your commitment to the job and the company. - Staying positive and bringing energy and enthusiasm to the workplace. - Communicating openly and honestly with your boss. - Going above and beyond your job duties to show your dedication. Apart from understanding your job role in terms of the job description, your kpis, organisation policies that affects your deliverables you need the support of your boss. Know his expectations from you. I will put it as understanding your boss as no two persons are the same especially when it comes Boss- Report relationship. If he is a family person, mention them once in a while like " oh how is madam and the children doing?", You can buy him a card on his birthday. Still keep it professional but he/she can see that you care. A lot of things go into a promotion as the role in question has not just the job description but a person profile that will fit just right. Nobody wants to promote people whom they see as unapproachable. Thank you.

It is important to be flexible and adapt to your surroundings in any walk of life, the same applies when dealing with your management. You have to work within their mindset, not against it.

Being agile. Follow your leader’s leadership style. Stick to procedures. Shows a lot of respect & support everything he/she doing. “Run” together as a team. Do not be as burden with your own perfectionism & be realistic.

I don't agree that you should just get in line and follow your boss's preferred mode of communication. Be aware of it. Absolutely. Respect it. Yes. But if your boss is open to it (and many will be), proactively instigate a conversation about the right way of communicating between the two of you. It's a relationship. Talk about each of your preferences, what you find challenging, what they need and what you need in order to be successful. Be prepared to compromise, but keep revisiting the conversation until you find a way of working that works for you both.

I agree that you need to respect their time and avoid unnecessary distractions and interruptions as this doesn’t make for a good use of their time or yours. However when it comes to adapting to their personality that is not always possible. The fall in line with things is sometimes the destroyer of improved and teams because no one has the courage to offer better alternatives that don’t fall in line with the boss’s preferences. Sometimes you got to be courageous and fall out of line to offer alternative solutions and thoughts. Some may not accept it but a good manager and boss will.

Collaborate with your leader. Support his/her achievement plan. Follow the work flow. Communicate your achievements & showing what you’ve being done.

To add on, supporting their success can first start by understanding their KPIs to their boss. Then, align your own KPIs such that it meets your boss's KPIs. Prioritize those KPIs. As your boss hits his/her KPIs and gains recognition so will will you and your relationship with your boss. Which makes it easier for you to be promoted.

If you've got a great boss, remember that they will also be keen to learn from you. Don't assume they're better at everything than you just because they're your boss. Teaching them something new or helping them to get better at something that might be your superpower is also a great way of showcasing your talents and building a strong relationship with your manager.

I came across a post that emphasized the importance of showcasing the effort you invest in your work to gain recognition and leave a lasting impression. Don't shy away from broadcasting your achievements, new ideas, innovations, and accomplishments to your superiors. In the professional world, those who do so are the ones who truly stand out. It's not solely about who completes the most tasks, but rather, it's about who is known for achieving the most and making an impact.

I've never been a huge fan of the phrase 'managing upwards', but have certainly appreciated it in the past when my direct reports have kept track of their achievements, feedback they've received and progress they've made. While we discuss these things regularly, I won't be aware of everything they've done, particularly if we don't regularly work together on projects (or remember it all when it comes to performance review time). It can be really helpful to be reminded of these things.

Knowing how to disagree and present a different perspective is really important and so is supporting a conversation that becomes a conflict. Being able to navigate conflict and ensure it is resolved sooner rather than latter is a must skill as conflict mostly gets avoided in the workplace. When avoiding it erodes through the team .

Getting promoted, I have learned over the years, is an outcome of the many things that you have done persistently and consistently. It is earned because of the series of success and or milestones you have achieved with your team. Having said that, I think that one's motivation should be focused on ensuring you outdo every task and or responsibility handed to you. The promotional opportunity comes when you are ready emotionally and mentally.

Work for the pay you want, not for the pay you have. Employers are not incentivized to pay you more to work harder. Promotions come when you’re noticed for being great at your current job. Also invest in yourself. Train for the position you want. Your boss will notice hard work or he/she is your wrong boss.

You always remember the boss that mistreated you you grow from that in terms of what you don’t want in a manager /boss as well as the one who supported you encouraged you and helped you grow.

Remember that not all bosses are the same. As I reflect on the relationships I've had with my own direct reports, I've valued it when we (together) have made space to talk about our relationship, what's working, what isn't, what triggers us (both), what experiences we've had with bosses that have worked well and not worked well with us. That's provided a strong foundation for a productive working relationship. I'd caution about assuming that your boss wants you to just get onboard with their vision and plans. This may be the case, but I can imagine many will also appreciate respectful challenges and builds on their views. I want my direct reports to speak up, not go along with whatever I say because I'm the 'boss'.
