How can you build relationships with geographically dispersed teams?

I started during the pandemic and managed a team remotely. To build their trust: ~Held virtual team meetings, once a week, to discuss production, projects, and to also share updates and collaborate on problems. ~ Monthly one on ones to review goals, progress, and provide mentorship. ~Held virtual coffee chats on one Friday of each month during which we would chat about topics other than work.

1. Adopt effective and simple communication over frequent communication. 2. Establish accountability. 3. Enforce values and not hard crack rules. 4. Build a high value team and never ever micromanage. Once you do that, no value person is going to care about the organization. 5. Create a sense of belonging and find things where all can enjoy together ( Eg. Cricket world cup) 6. Try for occasional meetups in some good place. 7. Help the team to embrace life. 8. Motivate the team to be better as humans. Value each others well being and challenge each other to become better .( In all aspects of life)

There is no such thing as over communicating. Remember, information is given. Communication is getting through! Don't forget the power of a handwritten note sent to your peoples home in a handwritten envelope with an actual postage stamp! That never gets forgotten and remember, people will always remember how you make them feel!

Through exchange of views to sort out differences till reach at same page in driving startgey to achieve set common goals.

Communication channels go a long way in establishing trust and accountability. A few pitfalls that I have observed are 1. Emails can come across as terse. 2. Awareness of audience is important. Reprimanding in a wide audience may result in loss of trust. 3. Including the contributor while communicating with seniors builds trust and confidence.

One of the fundamental ways to create trust within global teams is to be aware of and respect other cultures and how they operate. Simultaneously, they need to be aware of the same—this goes both ways. Create a way of working that is flexible to accommodate time zones and other specific work-life customs, adjust your deliverables with this in mind. Your team will witness leadership competence, and trust and accountability will be strengthened.

As a team lead, walking-the-talk is one of the ways to earn the trust of your team and also make them accountable. Be the leader that backs up his/her words or promises with action. This shows a leader that can be trusted, is accountable, and would endear similar behaviour from the team.

It can be a creativity challenge to come up with methods how to increase the sense of belonging if frequent meeting in person is not an option. For example in our company, teams are geographically dispersed and come from different cultures. Therefore we occasionally have informal calls to provide an introduction to one of the involved cultures if there is some kind of national celebration for it. This kind of approach can simultaneously promote an informal gathering and educate team members about each other's cultural backgrounds. Additionally celebrating achievements, even informally, can always have a good effect.

Using technology to enhance collaborative work is also a huge lever to pull especially when working on a project together. Microsoft has tools that enhance collaborative working while we can connect/ learn from each other without being physically present. Think Teams, shared document links, etc.. You wont feel the distance at all.. I use this a lot and it works! Sharing & learning has never been easier.

Try implementing "reverse mentoring" inside your remote, diverse workforce. ?? Encourage team members who are younger or less seasoned to mentor their more seasoned colleagues to promote a special sharing of perspectives, abilities and insights. This strategy fosters a climate of mutual respect and ongoing development among team members, improving cooperation and learning.

Clarity of roles helps to set common expectations. Also, possibly counterintuitively, having shared outcomes helps to align the cross functional teams and avoid prioritisation conflicts.

Setup social contract and ground rules. Working with geographically dispersed teams may also mean working with teams at different time zones and different cultures. It is important for the team to lay down some ground rules such as: ? Which day of the week the team should meet ? Preferred mode of communication ? Common working hours

This challenge is real especially in countries composed of islands with distinct ethnicity in each locality. But with the onset of the pandemic, somehow people needed to address this with remote and virtual meetings and catch-ups. What is most important is to make every engagement count and to have a regularity in the meets. Sometimes virtual meetings are even cherished more than face-to-face meet-ups ... it's the sincerity and desire to build lasting relationships that count the most.

Actively listening is a key tool, as Judge Judy say “ if you say the true, you don’t have to have a good memory.” So listen your team.
