How can you build professional relationships through informational interviews?

Informational interviews essentially mean having conversations with interesting people and mapping potential common interests—either immediate or for the future. Parties then agree if there are immediate tasks, networking opportunities or those for the future down the line. It is important to note that creating introductions for people in your network who do not know each other but where there is no particular material benefit fo the introducer is a great way of generating valuable networking methodology. Exchange of experience is an important part of learning both for the sharer and the listener. Usually these roles are intertwined.

Networking and Learning: Informational interviews serve as opportunities to connect with professionals in your field of interest. They offer insights into their career paths, industry trends, and valuable advice. Expand Industry Knowledge: Through these interviews, you gain a deeper understanding of the industry, its challenges, and emerging opportunities. Identify Your Goals: Understand why you want to talk to someone and what you hope to learn from them. Find Potential Interviewees: Use platforms like LinkedIn, alumni networks, professional associations, or personal referrals to find professionals in your field of interest. Craft Your Message: Write a concise and polite message that introduces yourself, explains your purpose, and requests a meeting. Be specific about what you want to learn, how much time you need, and your preferred mode of communication. Send Your Message: Send your crafted message via the appropriate channel. This could be an email, a LinkedIn message, or any other suitable method. Follow-up: If you don't hear back within a week or so, send a polite follow-up message.

Finding the right person is probably the hardest part of the process. Cold calling has a very low success rate but it remains an important tool to reach out to people. And hence it is imperative we find ways to automate cold calling to add efficiency to the process and see any success at all. Instead attend networking events, plan to do 3-4 at least in a year so as to build a pipeline.

Find interviewees: 1. Research: Use LinkedIn, forums, or company sites. 2. Referrals: Seek recommendations from connections. 3. Cold Outreach: Craft concise, personalized emails. 4. Engage on Social Media: Connect and share insights. 5. Network Events: Attend to make industry connections. 6. Professional Groups: Join relevant associations. 7. Follow-Up: Respectfully follow up if needed.

Anyone who has some or all of the information you want is a potential interviewee. So, the question is how do you connect with them? Here are some things i do. 1. Read up about them, or read things they have shared on the topic already. It could come from watching videos, reading and engaging with their posts on the subject, etc. This forms some basis for conversation when you do connect at last. And also, you don't want to go asking a question they already answered in a post somewhere. 2. Reach out and make a connection. while sending the connection request, add a note saying you have read this article, or seen that video, etc, and you found it very insightful. Introduce yourself, and say what you agree (or do not agree with) in their post

Be informed. Do your background research, and make sure you have not casually overlooked an information that is publicly available. See what they have posted on their social media, go find out what they have said in other publicly available interviews. Dig deep, and try to digest all such information ahead of time. As much as I have seen and experienced, this is all the preparation you need for an informational interview.

From a Project Management perspective, I find it helpful to look at the stringent job requirements and prepare to tie off experiences that have demonstrated those skills. Ensure to relate the experience to a job on your resume. The interview is the opportunity to delve deeper from where the resume left off.

Send a thank-you email: Within 24 hours of your interview, send a thank-you email to each person you interviewed with. Express your gratitude for the opportunity to interview and reiterate your interest in the position. Be sure to personalize each email and mention something specific from the interview that you found particularly intriguing or important. Be patient: After sending your thank-you email, give the hiring manager some time to respond. They may be conducting more interviews or need to discuss the candidates with their team. It's important to be patient and give them the space they need to make their decision.

I like a more personal approach; send them a video thank you. Tell them three things you learned during the interview and one or two things you will continue learning about. Ask them the best way to stay in contact with them: social media, email, phone, or text. Reach out occasionally to check in and see how they are doing and update them on your progress related to the field they are in.
