How can you build meaningful relationships in Staff Development?

I once heard that development and coaching relationships are built on three principles - gentleness, validation, and curiosity. Being able to approach building a relationship with a gradual and gentle approach allows for even the most guarded of people to feel safe in proceeding. Validation is an important step to building a relationship because it bridges gaps I beliefs and understandings. If you are able to validate someone’s reality it creates another layer of safety and they are often more willing to listen to alternate perspectives. Curiosity as a state of mind is an important part in building new or stronger relationships. Asking open-ended questions allows the other person to tell their own story and to share their perspective.

I've found that applying these principles extends beyond just one-on-one interactions; it should really be a part of the overall group dynamics and organizational culture. Curiosity isn't merely asking questions—it's a mindset. When a team member proposes a radical idea, instead of immediate critique, my first response should be, "Tell me more." This simple phrase transforms the conversation. The same goes for meetings. Don't just show up; show up prepared to absorb and contribute. This means doing your homework—know the agenda, understand the background, and come with questions. And don't forget to acknowledge 'invisible labor,' those thankless tasks often taken for granted. Call them out and show appreciation.

To think about others' development, you have to truly care about their growth. It works better that way. Why? Because otherwise you're only reading from a script. You're not tailoring to what the individual needs. True development starts with honest assessment of individual needs.

Building meaningful relationships in staff development often involves addressing the two fundamental human needs for attachment and authenticity. Creating an environment where employees feel safe to express themselves and don't need to engage in people-pleasing behaviours to belong is an important step. This can encourage trust, open communication, and ultimately lead to more meaningful and productive professional relationships.

The key is really taking a genuine interest in staff as individuals. Doing so builds the trust and rapport needed for a cohesive, supportive team environment.

Engage in active listening. Listen to what your colleagues have to say and show that you value their input. This can help build trust and improve communication. Building Trust when employees feel heard, they trust that their leaders have their best interests at heart. This trust is foundational for a cohesive and productive team environment.

Mentoring is clearly a great way to further develop staff. In addition to the standard forms of mentorship, I recommend reverse mentoring. When someone in a senior role is mentored by an employee in what may be considered to be a more subordinate role, such as a contact center director being mentored by a customer experience representative. This bolsters confidence allowing for the developing employee to be clearly seen as an expert. They communicate from a place of knowledge, experience, and comfort. The senior leader also has direct, honest access to feedback, bottle necks, and opportunities to improve. Reverse mentoring is highly recommended!

This mutual growth process is a testament to the strength of collaboration. It deepens learning, boosts confidence and forges lasting bonds, enriching the staff development experience.

Mentorship is an important tool that often doesn't get utilised formally and is left as just a subject. During my hospitality time, I was fortunate to have a formal system of being a mentee and a mentor system as a management trainee & later see this being replicated as a buddy system for any new joining associate. It helps the mentee find a foothold in the new place and learn the ropes. It also pushes a mentor to stay up-to-date and help someone grow. Overall, it builds a large network of connected people in an organisation.

It is amazing how many innovations come out of micro-collaborations that happen informally, than collaborations that have been forced through a strat meeting. These micro-collaborative units, often, will also be a pool for future leaders and they get formed at company get-togethers, breakfast tables, social catch-ups or even a smoke break. The key, to me, is being able to foster an environment that fosters such kind of openness where such collaborations or interactions are encouraged and people feel safe to connect inter/intra departmentally and share ideas when they have a light-bulb moment.

In my experience in several leadership development initiatives, it is essentail to be supportive and helpful. Be willing to lend a helping hand to your colleagues when they need it. Offer feedback, advice, and mentorship. Celebrate their successes and be there for them during their setbacks. It is also important to remember that relationships are two-way streets. Be sure to reciprocate the support and help that you receive from your colleagues. Be a good friend and mentor to others.

In my view, collaboration and cooperation are the backbone of a productive and positive work environment in staff development. Effective communication, shared resources and celebrating successes create a culture of trust and respect, resulting in enhanced productivity and morale. It's a win-win for both individuals and the team.

I totally believe that being proactive is crucial here. Don't wait for others to reach out to you. Take the initiative to introduce yourself and get to know your colleagues. In addition, try to be visible. Attend staff development events and participate in discussions. Make an effort to interact with people from different departments and levels of the organization.

Being supportive and empathetic transcends specific fields; it's a universal approach that fosters a fulfilling and positive work environment, benefiting both individuals and the collective team.

A lot of times leaders shy away from giving meaningful feedback in a timely manner. It’s is important to be candid when it comes to feedback, your intent should be clarified. We should remember that leading is not about being popular or liked by everyone but being fair, honest and concerned about the teams development.

I used to do a monthly feedback letter from my team - Letter to my Manager - that was anonymous feedback on my performance from my team. It asked for what the team members felt good about and bad about, 3 things for me to stop, 2 to continue and 1 to improve. It helped me grow and form my managerial style in the early days of my career.

It is also important to give feedback to your colleagues in return. This shows that you are invested in their success and that you value their contributions. When giving feedback, be sure to be specific, constructive, and respectful. By giving and receiving feedback, you can create a culture of continuous learning and improvement within your team. This can lead to stronger relationships, better performance, and greater overall success.

Building meaningful relationships in staff development starts with being genuine and authentic. People can spot a fake from a mile away, so it's important to be yourself and let your personality shine through. Be honest and open about your goals, aspirations, and challenges.

The value of having fun and socializing in staff development is universal. It's a reminder that work doesn't have to be all seriousness; it can also be a place where laughter, connection and shared experiences contribute to a more vibrant and productive team.

Absolutely, involving staff in the professional development (PD) process as leads, celebrating their strengths, and empowering them to share best practices is a great way to foster a culture of collaboration and staff development. This not only publicly appreciates and praises their contributions but also encourages continuous growth, both for the individuals and the team. When more staff are involved and empowered in the PD process, it creates a positive learning culture where educators are willing to take creative risks, ultimately enhancing students' learning experiences.
