How can you build a collaborative and diverse team?

One thing that I think is critical is assessing your own weaknesses and then searching to balance that with your team. For example, I am very direct. It's very helpful for me to have someone less direct on my team who can help soften and look at communication differently.

An assessment is a great way to know what your team lacks. This can give you insight into whether you need to provide professional development or if you need to hire additional help. Also, by assessing the strength of the team, you can see where one's talent might be more utilized for particular tasks or roles.

While serving as a Dean in a unionized environment, one of my challenges was engaging faculty. Transforming the mandatory meetings into small working groups to support division goals fueled significant progress on several projects: an interest-based, annual recruitment event funded through local grants and partnerships; the research, design, content, and implementation of a new website for community rentals; an annual professional development/appreciation day for adjunct faculty; etc. Postsecondary education need not be an “us vs. them” environment. Guide all parties toward understanding resources and limitations, provide margins for reality, and resolve institutional challenges together.

When a leader makes it clear that they don't respect or trust their staff, the same feelings are returned to leadership by the staff. When leaders don't allow their staff to voice their concerns or opinions, it makes staff feel unwelcome. Leaders need to put themselves in a position to learn from their staff. In turn, the staff will be more open to trust and respect leadership.

The speed with and degree to which conflicts/issues are handled should also be also noted as a top priority. The longer an issue goes unresolved, the more tension, angst, and resentment grow/build, which can then cripple any meaningful production.

As part of my on-boarding process with a new team member I always ask how they prefer to receive constructive feedback (i.e. my markups, email, formal sit down/conversation, informal conversation). I have found that helpful in building rapport/trust and ensuring that they know I recognize their own individual needs. This is a minor adjustment to any management practice, that I think goes a long way.

In my experience I get a more diverse team by not being focused on an exact skill set match. One because tasks are rarely amenable to just one skill set. In the process though I get team that has a diverse skill set and is almost always diverse in gender, race, sexuality, ethnicity, religion. Largely though that’s a consequence of having a deep skill pool in the US. Ya just gotta be intentional in looking for it.
