How can you best implement EdTech in rural schools?

I disagree with all of you. Implementing Edtech in rural schools does not always require new internet infrastructure, purchase of devices and all the sustainability problems which come with that. The key to the successful implementation of edtech is using existing technology, (what's already in their pocket) and existing mobile infrastructure. That's what I have done with Chalkbot - all it requires is an old Nokia-type phone with a broken screen and any type of mobile signal. It uses server-side voice recognition technology to connect a local phone call to chatGPT. Rural communities have dramatically different needs and interests than urban. Spend time finding out what is important to your students. Let their response to that be exactly your learning-projects ideas. You teach any subject through the context of what is important to them. Find technology that supports those ideas. Programmable drones to survey farmland, robotic arms to care for plants, math to calculate materials and supplies for building, biology to study seeds and soil. Let students research edtech related to these interests. But also reach out to your community to get their ideas. Now, just start! Start small, and let the projects grow as you figure out how these rural edtech projects are adding value to the lives of your students.

Its so important to be mindful of the tech you use. Technology without hands on tactile learning is dead. Students need conversation - collaboration and the ability to work together. Explain to your teachers that if they are using chromebooks as a $1000 dollar pencil - and calling it "technology" then they should just stick to a pencil. Students can tell when tech is being used to overcomplicate a task. Use it authentically. Let teachers and staff experiment with it first in a meeting so they can see the value.

If possible try to deliver the content offline due to the limited access to the internet.

I believe it's crucial to consider how technology can expand access to education and improve learning outcomes. For example, if we can cover more students with technology and have more effect on learning qualifications, we would think about purchasing that.

In most countries' rural areas, there rarely can find high-speed internet and electronic devices. The family's digital literacy to feel the need for these technologies is another bumper for providing adequate training using new technologies.

Adequate training and support should be continuous. As EdTech evolves so are the skills required for one to manoeuvre. The training should be multiple events scheduled over the course of the year

Adequate training and support can be as simple as having tech or instructional coaches volunteer to be in the room the first time a teacher uses a program. This provides an opportunity for everyone to see pitfalls and strengths. Let your teachers know it may not be perfect the first time but we can encourage trying again by learning from our mistakes. We can also model that for our students. More adults in the room can also make the teacher feel less overwhelmed and thereby be able to answer students questions faster.

You also need to Build Capacity and Support by providing robust training for teachers in using and integrating Edtech tools effectively. Consider peer-to-peer learning or online training modules adapted to their needs and technical skills. Community involvement: Get parents and the community involved in the process. Encourage their support and understanding of Edtech use in education. Training workshops or community demonstrations can help bridge the gap. You will also need technical support: Ensure reliable technical support, whether in-person or remotely, to troubleshoot any issues with devices or software. This can be crucial for smooth implementation and sustained use.

Many times language becomes a barrier in the process. Local training & support groups can be formed to reach & teach targeted customers.

One of the crucial parts is monitoring and evaluating progress and impact in the implementation process. Never forget to establish key performance indicators (KPIs) to measure the effects of your EdTech on learning outcomes, teacher effectiveness, and overall school performance. Try to take regular feedback from educators, students, and parents. It's the tech that matters when it comes to rural education it is the accessibility. Mobile phones have reached corners of the world that other gadgets can only dream of. If we want to make education inclusive for the rural children we have to reimagine the idea of mobile first in education. Using features like screen cast, mobile projection etc. a single mobile can scale to a full sized classroom. The other aspcet we need to look into is What we teach them, the content. For generations now we have tried to teach rural children the same curriculum that we taught children in big cities, we have to change that. Rural kids have to be taught stuff that is relevant to them in their environment.

The infrastructure of rural areas is the largest barrier for digital equality. I live in a major city but one of my friends teaches and lives in a very rural area. She said that even the highest internet available at home is so slow that during Covid, she found herself sitting in a parking lot using wifi to upload work for students and download work to grade. Her district parked school buses with mobile hotspots throughout town for students. This made real-time feedback very difficult. Your EdTech product can be life-changing but until the infrastructure catches up, there's only so much that can be done.

In COVID-19, I had a student from a rural area who had no internet connection in her home. We were in lockdown and no one could travel between different areas. Every time I shared a course material, that student would commute out of the village to reach an antenna mast and find an internet network. That was my big concern about needing a student support system as the most important infrastructure for e-learning.

All rural areas struggle with access to the internet. At the same time, 4G and 5G cellular data have helped, but it will take much more to reach remote areas across the United States and the world. During the pandemic, the local telecommunications company in my area set up wireless hot spots at community centers and volunteer fire departments so students could come and get and turn in assignments from their vehicles. While this wasn’t ideal, it helped provide some access to students who couldn’t do it otherwise. In the United States, we must prioritize changing the minimum broadband speed from 25 Mbps/3 Mbps to 100 Mbps/20 Mbps at least.

Recently, I visited a village in Bihar. Let me clarify upfront that it was not a completely remote location, but there were significant challenges related to network connectivity. The major issue I encountered was slow internet. To provide the best educational technology experience, the app should function seamlessly at low speeds and consume minimal data. Affordability is another concern since the local community cannot bear high prices. Therefore, it's imperative to restructure the courses to reduce data charges and make them budget-friendly for this audience.
