As per my understanding, to become best in your field, you need to be expert in that subject. to become expert in that subject, you need to find the domain that excites you! Once you find the exact area of interest or you can say your niche, which you are passionate to explore and learn about, being expert is just a matter of time then.

In order to be SME for a product, it involves good understanding of domain, industry and work area of a specific profession. Start gathering more insights, knowledge and learning new techniques. It is good to pick up specific use cases and start applying knowledge and learnings from the published resources. To be successful as an SME in the field of business analysis one has to be a constant student. When I was asked to lead a team of business analysts in the credit origination domain I had no prior experience in credit. I started by allotting time to get a thorough understanding of the domain by going through all the e-learning modules that were part of the core credit curriculum and certification of the bank that all credit analysts and RMs had to go through, followed by a week of classroom learning taught by trainers that had served as credit officers, involving solving of real life cases studies. Going through the same rigour as the users of the processes and systems I was meant to design, helped me a get a thorough grasp of the subject.

In the field of business analysis to be successful as an SME you have to continuous learn and understanding of domain, industry and work area of a specific profession. As I have mentioned above that becoming a SME requires immense knowledge & research as well as strategic approach & consistent effort in your chosen field. From my perspective , below things are very important to become a good SME 1. Expand your domain knowledge with lot of industry recognised certifications. For example , I work on the Healthcare side and there are lot of industry recognised certifications like PAHM and FAHM which could further widen your domain knowledge 2. Always know what is the latest trend in your domain , say for example in the domain of healthcare there are lot of advancements happening on HL7 and FHIR and see how it can be applied in your day to day work These are some simple steps to become a good SME

Some basic tricks to become SME as a BA : --> Having interest in a Subject area . --> Inquisitive mindset. --> Research and staying updated on the subject .(ex if payments is your area, then keep yourself updated on the new innovations happening in Payments domain across the globe.) --> Question your doubts to people who you feel may have answers to it. -->Learn and share your knowledge because that is the best to way to understand better. --> Never hesitate to ask any silly/basic questions you may have. --> Take up certifications . Spending for gaining knowledge is the best investment :)

It's funny how this article is about becoming an SME, when I've never seen myself as one. Despite being an Instructor, coach, & a mentor to some, it always feels like there's an unlimited grassland of knowledge that can only deem me an 'Expert' once I cover it all, which will never happen & I feel good about keeping it that way I'm always skeptical about self-proclaimed experts because I pay closer attention to their learning & development habits. I put more credibility towards someone achieving an 'Expert' title when they have habits built in continuously learning. My easy life hack for continuous learning? Ask questions. Seek out contextual scenarios, always look at other perspectives & make efforts to understand them; I learn every time.

Consider whether you really need to be a subject matter expert to effectively perform the role of a business analyst. The BA role involves, among other things, supporting others in discovering business needs and developing optimal solutions – you don't necessarily have to possess full knowledge in a specific business area. In many cases, it suffices to be able to ask the right questions and analyze the obtained information. From my experience, having less domain knowledge can be used as an advantage. You'll ask questions that others wouldn't, challenge facts and solutions considered obvious by others. You'll look at the problem from your perspective, without biases, assumptions, and limitations to your own knowledge and viewpoint.

It's common to stumble into an area of expertise. The client asks for research on a specific eCommerce payment solution. Your manager deadlines you with a team presentation on Content Management Systems. Suddenly you're the 'go to person'! Being a SME involves being visible. Embrace the challenge. Develop your authority.

In my opinion for being an expert on any matter or subject, you should stick with your 3Ps i.e., Practice, Patience & Persistence. Applying your learnings practically to gain real-world experience in your niche while staying patient & persistent in your pursuit will gradually establish you as an authority in your respective domain.

The most optimum way is to have domain work experience, however that may not be the case always. For example I have work experience across Corporate Banking and treasury, however the project assigned and opportunity presented is of Retail Banking. In such case, the ability to understand the nitty gritties of Business from clients perspective becomes very important. Networking, Communcating and learning from people who are already in the domain helps to upskill and come up the curve. Also learning from other resources (training, digital medium, books, etc) can also help.
