How can you become an e-learning developer?

You don't necessarily need to go to school to be an e-learning developer if you have several years of experience in your field of interest, but it helps to have a solid foundation via certifications and self-study. Before I embarked in L&D, I was a research microbiologist who got a great opportunity to develop and facilitate laboratory training in Spanish. This helped me transition to training development and learning strategy, focusing in life sciences. Throughout my career, I got certified as an e-learning instructional designer, completed a certification in management of learning programs, and now I am pursuing a doctoral degree in distance education. I recommend this field to anyone who is passionate about education.

One thing I've found very helpful is to distill the lesson to its greatest contrasts. Be careful not to list a factual, but extremely similar point. Note when "smarter" is bolstered by "faster", "more efficient", "saves time", "innovative" etc. If it is still a distinct point of discussion, be willing to expand on why it should be treated as its own bullet.

Most importantly, you need to be creative and eager to create something that others can really engage with. With the current authoring tools, anyone can develop an eLearning. So, you need these basic skills at least to stand out: 1- Solid knowledge of one popular eLearning authoring tool (Storyline or Captivate) 2- ADDIE (Even if you are just a developer) 3- Graphics & Design 4- Video Editing 5- Gamification

I think being aware of the tools at your disposal is a critical skill to becoming an e-learning developer. There are many brands of e-learning platforms and many templates of course delivery. You do not have to learn them all, but you should make an informed decision as to what structure can best fits your objectives and re-evaluate if you've outgrown it.

This is my plan to you: 1- Understand ADDIE. I like this book: Instructional Design: The Addie Approach. I am also sure you can find plenty of materials online for free. 2- Download Articulate Storyline or Adobe Captivate. Use the trial period very well to learn the tools. Create creative prototypes every day. 3- Learn Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop. You need them. It will be great if you also read about design tricks and color theories. 4- Learn video editing. The best way is to start with a free software and then create a short tutorial video about something. You will get to know the tool well. Try to make the video engaging with professional animations and transitions. 5- The cherry on the top is to learn about gamification.

I got my start in the humble work of a hobbyist who made quizzes online. The content I was building had to lead to predictable outcome. The questions had to be engaging and the pre-composed answers had to be distinct enough to be categorized in such a way that each result had an equal chance of selection. If you've ever had to think about how to draw out strangers online, how to classify your audience, and what to leave them with after the interaction - you're on your way to becoming an e-learning developer.

To begin marketing yourself as a professional e-learning developer, you can start with a specific lesson on YouTube, Udemy, or Wikihow. Don't let your current tools discourage you from making meaningful content - if it fills a learning need, it is valuable.
