How can you balance user feedback with design considerations in architecture?

A valuable lesson I learned in my years of work is to always respect the preferences of my clients. In residential projects ,they are the ones who will live there, so I should try to understand their needs and wants. If they are not satisfied, I should explain my decisions and show them how they benefit them.

Interesting topic. Speaking of balance between user feedback and design consideration has two constrain, they are TASTE and FUNCTION. Indicator of balance’s achieved, is when the building is being built as its purpose. Most of the client, do not understand about FUNCTION which related to building codes. What do they wanted and care most, is TASTE, because it’s their identity. It is the architect’s job to balance these 2 from user’s feedback. There are two types of architecture product design. They are FUNCTION follow form(TASTE) ; Hospital, office, etc or form(TASTE) follow FUNCTION ; artwork with function inside, gallery, etc.

I think to Prioritize feedback based on its relevance to the project goals, the frequency it appears, and the severity of the concerns raised Also Maintain open communication channels with users/client throughout the design process Most important architects need to consider fundamental design principles like functionality, safety, aesthetics, environmental sustainability, and regulatory compliance.

Engage Stakeholders Early: Involve users, community members, and other stakeholders in the design process from the earliest stages. Prioritize User Experience: Consider how individuals will interact with the space. Accessibility, comfort, safety, and functionality are key aspects of user experience that should be prioritized alongside aesthetic considerations. Iterative Design Process: Architecture should be seen as an iterative process where initial designs are presented to users, feedback is gathered, and designs are then refined. Evidence-Based Design: Use data and research to inform design decisions. Flexibility and Adaptability: Design spaces that are flexible and can adapt to changing needs over time.

All feedbacks are valuable. We should try not to take them personally and just learn from them and find out what is the next step. Feedbacks help us improve our skills and performance. We should appreciate the constructive criticism and use it to grow.

Feed back from any source is fairly critical in all projects. The public, client, and project stakeholders are the intended user of the architecture and it’s concluded design. So it only make sense to consider their opinion to be an important factor of the design process. Workshops, online surveys or evaluation forms are a great way to get that feedback and ensure the design intent is met through the user’s perspective.

Organizing feedbacks is similar to organizing tasks. It can be challenging, so one can ask for help from other experts. It is vital to stick to the scope of the project while considering feedbacks. Feedbacks can provide useful insights and suggestions for improvement. They can also help identify potential risks and issues that need to be addressed.

Communication is a 2 way channel. Feedback is needed to understand the users needs, while equally important is the architect communicating the design to the user. Sometimes the best solution is already achieved, but architect and enduser see it from different perspectives. The architect needs empathy- to see the problem from the user's shoes. And the user needs to trust the architect and see his solution from their lens.

Design Principles and User requirements are two sides of the same coin. An ideal principle solves end user requirement and vice versa. The role of an architect is to identify the right design solution for the specific need. Feedback allows the user to communicate the requirement to the architect.

Firstly, most important factor is to Unified Goals of the project with the user or client, such as aesthetics, functionality, sustainability, and budget. Secondly, create a Continuous Feedback Loop with the user or client; Finally, Within the framework of the goal, give full play to professional abilities.

Architectural iteration is often like architect having a conversation with the user. A dialogue. The user poses a need. The architect responds with a solution. The user responds with a different interpretation of the problem. The architect revises his thinking. The conversation leads to a healthy solution as long the base rules and trust is established between the user and architect.
