How can you balance speed and quality during culture change?

Cultural change is time consuming and slower than other change initiatives, and can't be possible overnight. It requires a commitment from the top leaders to demonstrate the behavior they want in their teams.Visible culture is just like a tip of the ice berg and unspoken culture is similar to an iceberg which, if left unattended, could cause damage.

First determine which is more valuable to the organization, Speed or Quality, and from that create policies, procedures and work flows to accomplish that proportionate response

Don't try to speed up the cultural change as it could have negative impact. Let the change takes a natural time. Role of a top leader in cultural change is very critical. They set the tone and bring the people together.

Changing culture is a challenge, and the larger the company - the bigger the silos - the harder that change becomes. Defining scope and priorities cannot happen in a vacuum if you want the change to stick. Consider how you can engage employees at all levels and across departments to evaluate what needs to change and define priorities. Ultimately, it should tie back to something that matters to your employees. Creating a culture of innovation, for example, can help people feel fulfilled. You need to consider factors including psychological safety, the abilities and gaps of your leaders and the systems and tools that will support the change in culture. That may be overwhelming, but focus on incremental gains to balance speed and quality.

During a period of significant organizational restructuring, I placed a strong emphasis on cultivating adaptability within my team. I encouraged an environment where flexibility was valued and where team members were comfortable with uncertainty. Cultural transformation is about the incremental journey. To borrow from lean methodology, institute a simple PDCA framework into the transformation roadmap. For each small incremental change, create a Plan of implementation (P), Do the execution (D), Check for realtime feedback and output trends (C), and Act objectively on the feedback and recommendations (A) which could range from reinforcement to pivoting on strategies, at all times focusing on iterative improvement for the people.

View culture change as a dynamic journey rather than a fixed destination. Embrace the idea that adaptation and improvement are not just responses to challenges but integral components of the transformation itself. Instead of aiming for perfection, foster a culture that thrives on continuous learning, where every shift becomes a stepping stone to refine and enhance the organization's identity. Recognize that the true success lies in the ability to navigate change fluidly, acknowledging both achievements and hurdles as essential elements of the evolving cultural landscape.

Culture change should not be for the sake of changing the culture. If a leader or executive tells me they are changing their culture...I would be asking them why? To what end? What business imperatives are driving this? What business strategies will it support, etc. While I know this article is general inquiry, what's missing out of the gate is the business reasons for culture change. Changing company culture needs to be directly aligned to business outcomes desired otherwise, it will die on the vine.

Respect and Accept. It is very important that everyone feels respected and accepted the way they are. Change in culture, needs to be understood, why it’s needed and how it will help improve quality of work environment. It needs to be presented in a positive way, as change requires internal will, it can never be forced. With the view for a better work culture, productive work environment it is important for everyone to have openness and embrace the change for collective betterment.

I find it important (and sometimes hard!) to stay patience with every type of stakeholder. The basic for me is and always will be to keep listening. Which doesn’t always mean that the other person (nor me) is right. Keep an open channel!
