In most countries, the national energy roadmap would already account for an increasing mix of renewable energy (e.g. solar, wind, geothermal, nuclear etc.) to meet their environmental commitments. The next step is for governments to follow through with regulatory and financial support mechanisms (e.g. competitive FITs, tax cuts, carbon taxes etc.) to incentivize private sector investments into ancillary solutions such as battery storage and smart grid solutions which can then support a more diversified energy mix without short-changing grid reliability.

Diversification of energy mix is the key for reliable power generation. Energy sources are often procured from all around the world and potential geopolitical risks will cause unstable supply chains and potentially disrupt reliable power generation. Renewables are also usually weather dependent and would dip in bad weather conditions. Hence, a careful mix of energy sources should be considered not just for its green attributes but also its reliability in supply. There were instances of electricity price hike when renewable production drop due to poor weather conditions.

Energy efficiency is an important factor in power generation be it for renewable energy or traditional fossil energy. It also has direct implications on the environment. For renewable energy, high efficiency would mean that renewable energy can become competitive compared to fossil fuel. . For a fossil based power generation, efficiency alone is a huge factor on its impact to environment. A conventional gas turbine has efficiency slightly above 30%, steam turbine slightly higher value and combined cycle power plants have efficiency not above 70%. This would mean that the remaining energy is wasted as heat to environment and it will cause environmental impact other than GHG generation.
