How can you balance ethos and credibility in your public speaking?

When we slip & fall after stepping on a banana peel, we dont laugh - but if it happens with others, we do. More often we relate to others' failures rather than successes - its how our subconscious mind is configured. Hence as a public speaker - you can maintain your ethos and credibility by being "You"...sharing your failures, use humour upon yourself, acknowledging those that have helped shape you.

Credibility comes from delivering a speech that is real, genuine, and does not make an attempt to connect with tricks and linguistic sleight of hand, but connects because it is real.

Being an exceptional speaker requires thorough preparation, unwavering focus, and practicing controlled breathing. I firmly believe that using concrete, real-life examples is the most effective way to emphasize the importance of the message you want to convey. A speaker's understanding of the subject matter and confidence are crucial. Lastly, using humor can be tricky as it may offend the audience or result in self-deprecating comments, so use humor carefully.

Balancing ethos and credibility in public speaking is simple when you are authentic and honest. Like Maya Angelou said, people may not remember what you say, but they remember how you make them feel. When you are authentic, people will see you as more relatable. When you tell the truth, people will listen. As a public speaker, being yourself makes you feel better, and your delivery will improve. If you are trying to be something that you are not the audience will notice.

In my experience I do not believe one should ever attempt to speak on something that they are not an expert on. If you cannot speak without a PowerPoint deck, then you are not an expert. I had a presentation today and technology failed, I just went right Into my presentation. Never speak on something you are not an expert on.

To establish credibility, subtleness is important. It shouldn't be like you are continuously talking about your own achievements. It must be relevant for the audience. For instance, in my Public Speaking sessions, I talk about my experiences of speaking at different venues in a storytelling style sharing hurdles and obstacles and how I overcame it. This inspires the audience , clarify important concepts and at the end establishes my authority.

Credibility is the foundation of ethos. Demonstrate your expertise by citing relevant research, data, and statistics. Showcase your experience by sharing anecdotes or case studies that illustrate your points. Even acknowledging opposing viewpoints and addressing them thoughtfully strengthens your credibility. Remember, credibility is built over time. The more you deliver well-researched, informative speeches, the more your audience will trust you as a reliable source of information. Additionally, actively cultivating a strong reputation as an expert in your field through publishing articles, giving interviews, or participating in relevant online communities can further solidify your credibility before you even step onto the stage.

When addressing people who don't understand to the working language of our profession, it is imperative to explain what we meant. Clear, easy, simple and short statements are preferable. Adding unnecessary details doesn't show our level of expertise, rather they demonstrate our deficiency.

The art of language is a game-changer in communication. By choosing words wisely and ensuring they're both insightful and understandable, we bridge the gap between expertise and audience engagement. Steering clear of jargon, unless it's universally known or explained, makes the content more relatable. This not only showcases your knowledge but also respects your audience's perspective. Mastering this balance truly elevates the impact of your message.

The words we use are key to conveying a message, but even more so for creating a positive impression on our audience. This often happens unconsciously. That's why I'm confident these tips work well. First, clearly state what you want to say. Answering the question, "Who wants to do what and why?" will help you be more precise. Additionally, use words that support your goal. For example, instead of saying, "we want to find ways to solve the problem," say, "I have an idea that, if implemented, will solve the problem." This kind of clear and confident language helps people understand what you're saying and see you as a trustworthy and confident person.

If you want balance ethos and credibility in your public speaking, you must look upon your talk as the sum of many collective parts…all need to be working in harmony or order for you to deliver than ‘yet another presentation’. Once you have your words down and you know your timing works, move to a storyboard. This allows you move off the page and look at your audience with your arms free. Study everything to do with body language, eye contact, movement and also tonality of voice, pace etc and how these all work together to add colour and texture to your talk. Highlight on your storyboard where you need your being in the body language, the movement, the vocal inflexions and all the elements that will lift your talk and make it stick.

The best public speakers hone in on Body Language and know how to use it to their advantage. Not only do they master their presence in front of others but, arguably more importantly, they understand how to read the audience to adapt their delivery on the fly. Maintaining a certain level of engagement and enthusiasm is critical when it comes to delivery of your topic. Understanding body language and adapting to maintain or exceed that level makes or breaks your credibility as a true expert.

Non-verbal communication is a vital aspect of public speaking, conveying just as much information as spoken words. A speaker's body language, facial expressions, and physical presence can either reinforce or contradict their message. Confident non-verbal cues can engage and persuade the audience, while negative ones can distract and undermine the speaker's credibility. Key non-verbal elements to focus on include: - Eye contact: Engage with the audience, building trust and connection. - Posture: Stand tall, conveying confidence and authority. - Gestures: Use purposeful movements to emphasize points and illustrate ideas.

Let your audience know that you know how they feel about the topic you are speaking on. Know before you speak to them about their dreams and fears vis a vis your big idea. They don't care what you know, until they know you care.

Whenever possible, avoid using notes. If the topic is something you are truly passionate about, it should come fairly naturally. That passion needs to be contagious; engaging the audience is what ignites the passion within them. Interaction shows that you value them as much as they value you; that level of humility and awareness goes a long way.

I prefer to be well planned and rehearse my talking points before addressing an audience in a formal setting. I generally enjoy panel discussions and as a panelist I am able to guide the discussion towards my inclination. I am less structured in an impromptu or social setting where I prefer to have a stronger audience engagement and field responses whilst structuring my envisaged message. Factual information, audience engagement, rapport and experience bodes well when engaging varied audience types.

Every speech you deliver provides you with an opportunity to learn, grow and perfect. There are lots of opportunities to speak in public and some do it well enough to derive a living from it, others see it as an opportunity to make money, whatever the motives for taking up public speaking, like any job or performance your delivery must be done well, engaging your audience, “holding the room”. Your tone, your presentation, content, charisma, body language, posture, etc all contribute to your delivery and authenticity.

Feedback is a form of making ourselves better and learning from our mistakes that we are unaware of. As a public speaker, one must be open to feedback, especially from peers and mentors. You can also give yourself feedback by assessing and observing your speech closely and finding the areas of improvement.

One should be open to constructive criticism. You should take the feedback from peers and mentors with a positive attitude. You will never learn until you know and correct your mistakes. Life is full of learnings and you should work on improving continuously.

There's always room for improvement when we view ourselves from the audience's perspective. As speakers, it's crucial to prioritize the audience's experience. One should always welcome constructive feedback to refine even the smallest details of their public presentation.

Present yourself as one from amongst the audience only! This would allow you to build rapport, share stories, experiences genuinely and the audience will automatically connect with it Ask a few simple questions to engage with the listeners and add an element of humor to it. Let it be a conversation with the audience wherein you do most of the talking on their behalf, in their language and through their emotions

Humor can be a powerful way to make what you have to say memorable and to get your audience to open up. Successful public speaking includes making the audience laugh

The real key is to show up as yourself. And, of course, the challenge is to have developed a strong sense of who you are and what you value before you become a public speaker. I am only an effective presenter when I am presenting content that I believe in deeply. As a result, one of the best lessons I’ve ever learned is to create and own my content, not simply to present what someone has given me or what I think I’m supposed to present. If I am ever given a slide or slides that someone would like me to present, I ask them if they mind if I make it my own. My ethos can only come from me. I am adamant that I be granted the courtesy of creating my own content.

There should be nothing that needs to be balanced. Your credibility and ethos are part of your authentic self. If you are lacking in either, the real question is whether you should be speaking publicly.

‘Ethos’ are distinguishing character and ‘Credibility’ is the strength of overlapping arguments. By being realistic and authentic, delicate balance between ‘Ethos’ and ‘Credibility’ can be achieved during a ‘Public Speaking’. Depending on the level of audience and arguments, public speaking can easily be shaped to meet both the ends. Also, it will be na?ve to presume that audience are uninformed and ignorant; they very quickly grasp the essence and personality and depth of arguments of the speaker. Sincerity to the topic, in-depth research and frank flow of arguments will ease into balancing between ‘Ethos’ and ‘Credibility’. Cheers.
