I agree that placing patients first will lead to better outcomes for them and healthcare as a whole. Optimal quality care for our patients will also help reduce our healthcare costs.

In my experience, I have found that putting patients first and foremost, by spending the time necessary to globally assess them leads to the best outcomes, less referals to specialists, quicker recover and less expense. If you spend the money/time up front your end result will be more desireable for both the patients and the providers. Re-admission rates are an excellent indicator of placing outcomes last. This is just my opinion and experience in both acute, sub-acute and out-patient settings.

In the long run, patient population will be willing to pay the cost for the care they receive.
