How can you avoid mistakes while collaborating with other software developers?

This is essential for avoiding conflicts and maintaining a consistent codebase. By using it we can avoid code conflicts.

With version we can see changes done, revert changes, merge changes and resolve any code conflicts. A common branch workflow should be followed in the team. A new branch should be created for any feature/change and should be merged back in the parent branch afterwards. The branch name can include a task/bug id to make it more informative l. Similarly the commit messages should be informative and should have a short description of the change done.

Proactively communicating is a key to lock/unlock the progress. Clearly define tasks and conduct regular code reviews to catch errors early. One of the major reasons for version control is for tracking code change which is very frequent in an active development team. But communication should be as frequent as code changes. For this purpose we developers have to collaborate frequently with the team after scope and team goals gets cleared. Then we have to set targets and set time to time meeting to check progress and track the issues involved.

Following coding standards and conventions has been a turning point in my coding journey. It ensures uniformity and also improves the development process. When there's a shared set of guidelines, it establishes clarity, making it easier for team members to understand and contribute seamlessly. It's more like speaking a common language, fostering collaboration without unnecessary hurdles.

Write high quality code following the coding standards. The code should be readable and well organised. There are extensions available in code editors like Visual Studio Code which helps in code indentation, highlighting errors and providing suggestions for functions to use. There should be comments in code to explain what that particular section of code does e.g the functions should have comments which includes the parameters they accept whether required or optional, the input format, the output if the function is returning an output.

Usage of tools like Prettier, ESlint can make our life easier but I would prefer a technical architect from the team to provide the basic guidelines on the coding standards and conventions to be followed throughout the development. New coding standards and conventions are coming up on a daily basis. Our brains are filled with lot of approaches and ideas so this must be streamlined to a single path to have consistency across.

Together, these 2 practices create a foundation of trust among team members.

Tests should be written for the features built and should be run to make sure we are getting the result as expected. The test tools depends on the language e.g. Pytest can be used in Python. The documentation should be created for the features you are creating. The documentation should have description of the features and how to use/implement the features.

In my experience tests are the actual source of truth that can reveal the usability of the feature. Tests itself act as a good documentation. and if you follow test driven development then it will also try to keep you code clean. While collaborating with many contributors tests help to understand the functionality without spending much time.

Wheather it is a code or a small feature, it needs review. You have to regularly review your code for potential improvements, such as removing redundancies, simplifying complex logic, and enhancing readability. This process, known as refactoring, contributes to maintaining a clean and maintainable codebase.

Refactoring is a major part of software development. it keeps your code clean and force you to write the code which reveals the intentions on its own. to keep refactoring reviews are needed so that you have other pair of eyes looking at your code to avoid unforeseen issues.

Code reviews should be done to eliminate errors and see if the feature is working as expected. The code can be reviewed by peers to check quality of code and the performance before merging into the main branch. So code reviews are important for making the code quality better and efficient. The necessary code refactoring should be done based on the reviews.
